Looking for updates to Windows 95

I am going to reinstall Windows 95 on an old machine that I have. It certainly will take a while since my win95 is an upgrade version on CD. First I have to install win3.11, and then, since the CD drive is broken, have to transfer the install folder via null modem cable from another machine. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20>

A problem, beside the fact that win95 is no longer supported, is that I have a non English version and in some cases you need localized files. There are of course many updates that are more or less important depending on what you are going to do with the machine etc. The service pack, mentioned below, will update the OS to Win 95a, so I am obviously looking for updates after that.

At the moment I have the following updates:
Windows 95 Service Pack 1 (local.)
Windows 95 Year 2000 Update (local.)
Share Level Password update (I think it's that one)
I also think I have some update for OLE 32 somewhere.

Updates I know about, but is hard to find localized/or I don't know if I need localized:
Kernel 32 (This one should be localized, correct?)
    DUN 1.3 or DUN 1.4
    Windows Socket 2
Year 2000 update for DUN 1.3 or Windows Socket 2.

I have been looking around the net, for instance at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads but it seems hard to find a final and complete list of the updates that have been released. Should be easy since no more are produced. For instance there is a link (on ...windows95/downloads) to "DUN 1.3/Winsock2 year 2000 update", but no links to DUN 1.3 or 1.4. I found a link to the latter (English ver.) here in the Lounge.

I have also looked at the Microsoft Download Center (Swedish), and win95, but it almost only came up with DirectX, Mediaplayer and IE 5.5 updates.

Another question could be what, if any, browser to use on that machine. Then we really could talk about problem looking for updates <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15> And then what kind of firewall to use on a 486-66 MHz with 20 MB RAM. I know that I a long time ago had some firewall software on that machine before I bought newer machines with WinXP etc. I guess I'll have to scan trough my CD collection for a suitable browser and firewall. It's not that funny d/l 30-60 MB IE 5.5 SP2 or similar when you have for instance IE 5.0 (Office 2000 version) on a CD, but then how do you find any updates to that one? I guess Office 2000 sr-1 etc. will do some small updating of the IE, but then next?

    Any help appreciated.

    Regards,

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

I have to ask (no insult or derogatory remarks) why you would put yourself through this torture ??? The system you will have when you are finished will be a fossil !! And without a working CD drive......... how will you install programs (if you can still find the install disks) ??

It should be a simple matter to get a Windows 95B disk from a computer show or local mom & pop store for almost nothing. I personally have 5 such disks for computers that no longer exist (at least not as computers) and would gladly give them away. It is very likely that if you look around, you can find a used machine with MUCH better specs for sale locally for under $150 complete. If you are capable enough to attempt to resurrect your old machine then you can handle a simple once over of an old machine to see if it is working properly. Unless you have some personal attachment to your old machine or simply enjoy the challenge, I'd look in a different direction. But that's just my <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>.

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

Well, as you can see in this forum, there are people who still use win95. I could of course put OS/2, or any other OS I have around not installed (that work wirh system spec.), in the machine, but prefer a MS OS in this case. As to 95 A, B, or C etc; as 95 was developed I think they added USB support and that is of no use on that machine. And 95B also needs updates. Of course the system will be old, but not useless.

Yes, you can find used machines of any sort at any price, to use as second or third machine (or parts). In this case, more sort of a challenge to put the machine in full working condition as it was. As to programs, well at the time 95 came there where floppies as well as CD's. No problem installing for instance Office95.

The general question was if there was any source with a complete list of the win95 updates.

    As to my questions:
Last first, as I looked through my CD collection more thoroughly I found a copy of IE 5.5 SP2, so no need searching the net.

Regarding Win95 updates I found a very useful page, created by Ben Jos Walbeehm. It contains info. about which updates are necessary and which updates that has been replaced by others etc.

In my case I seem to have most of them; then there is the problem with finding localized versions.

    Argus,
As I meant to say (typo, left out a word), "No insults or derogatory remarks intended", I was simply offering an opinion and posing a question. But if you are set on doing this, then try here or here. HTH

    Doc Watson,
Your opinion is certainly accepted. I think I was a little harsh in my answer, but from my first question I think you could see that I was not a novice looking for advice with the one and only computer. I guess I was a bit tired on replies with no answers but opinions like: "That will not work ...", "Why don't you ...". <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>
If one is planning to do any kind of more advanced work or working with the latest programs such old system will not work, on that point you are correct. And it can be hard to find some updates, I know that.

Your second link to Winplanet had some useful information, even if it is a bit old. Thanks for the links.

To others, looking for information about Windows 95 updates, I now can share this link:
    http://web.archive.org/web/20021202070706/...m/win95upd.html

I have not found Ben Jos Walbeehm's page: www.walbeehm.com/win95upd.html or any new place, but there is a copy at Internet Archive Wayback Machine: http://www.archive.org/web/web.php see link above.

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

    Argus,
I understand your frustration. Only a true tweaker would attempt to resurrect an old Win 95 system (personally I wouldn't go back past Win 98). And they would likely have a very good reason for doing so. I just wanted to determine your tenacity for such a project given it's extensive roll-back to Windows 3.1 as an initial install and then upgrading from there. I admire your courage !!! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> I'll poke around a bit more and see if I can come up with some better information to help you along in your task.
    Best of luck to ya !! <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

    <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> , tweaker I am. <img src=/S/compute.gif border=0 alt=compute width=40 height=20> It's not so much frustration, except when it comes to finding non-English versions of updates!

Really, there is no alternative on this machine. After a long time with win95 and different programs inst/uninst. the best thing to do is a clean install. The system spec. is so old and I can not see that, for instance, win98 would be better. Beside it's hard to find any of those OS. If it was a, lets say pentium 100 MHz, PCI bus etc etc, but now, no. Of course I could just throw it away.

Now win95 is up and running with the SP1. A rather quick process. As with newer OS, you can install the upgrade with earlier install disk in drive to seek for. In this case installed directly from DOS.
I don't know if anything went wrong when I d/l some updates earlier from the link I mentioned. Some of the updates where fine, but some didn't run under win95 (of course it was the right update). It said something about not being a win32 program. The icon was not the same as other updates, more like those for DOS. But for instance WinRAR could open the archive, and it wasn't damaged. Well I tested a quick d/l from another place and they are OK:

    Last Win 95 Updates
    http://www.linkscomputersupport.co.uk/win95ud.htm

Well at the moment, I have SP1 and the kernel32 updates in Swedish. I don't know if I will try to install the other. Of course if the file being updated already is in English no harm is done. I remember some years ago when having only one machine with win95 that had been patched many times over the years, it was not so funny; from time to time there was English dialogs etc. For instance if I install Dial-up 1.4, English, I will have a English program group "accessories" together with one in Swedish etc. etc. It will just be a total mess.

I know friends who buy English versions of their OS so they get updates earlier, they can get them easier etc. When WinXP SP2 is ready I guess I have to wait 4-5 weeks longer than people having English version.

Personally, I wouldn't touch any Win9x system unless I had a client paying me to do so. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Even when they were current, I was an NT guy, and I laughed at all the folks in the office and their endless blue screens and instability problems.

    Some of us non-corporate types really only had the option of a 9x system or a Mac <img src=/S/pcvmac.gif border=0 alt=pcvmac width=137 height=30> .

    NT was some esoteric system for geeks <img src=/S/frank.gif border=0 alt=frank width=15 height=15> in the programing department <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>and the dumb terminals that the drones <img src=/S/brainwash.gif border=0 alt=brainwash width=15 height=15> work on !! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/angel.gif border=0 alt=angel width=15 height=21>

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

Fair enough. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I was given a Win95 workstation at the office and quickly got rid of the OS, replacing it with NT 4. At the time, I didn't have a computer at home, and when I finally did make the move into my living room with Wintel hardware, it came with Windows 98. I fought Windows 98 until 2000 Professional came around, because NT at home just did not have the flexibility for a home use machine. My NT box at the office sat next to the VT420 terminal that never crashed.

That was then, though...these days, I would revive an old machine with a Linux distro before I touched Win9x!

Re: Looking for updates to Windows 95

At least my initial questions make some amusement here.

Regarding what to touch and not to:

Primo: There is a machine that needs a OS, not a OS that needs a machine. So then I look at what kind of OS I can put into a 486-66. Well, Linux will work, but is not preferred this time. Thus win95, and I also have that OS. The machine has been running on 95 before.

Secundo: We are not talking about the one and only computer for a person, a production machine for a writer etc. It can be used just for fun. Maybe some old relative that never have worked with a computer can use it etc. For latter case of course you can buy a brand new also.

So, I am not struggling with writing my PhD thesis on that machine. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
