Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

To keep things simple, can you edit your original post and attach an updated HijackThis log? The SpyBot and AdAware changes may well have shortened the extensive list you have posted. HTH

    Steve,

I assume you went to IE options, general tab and checked and or changed the "home page" setting back to what you want it to be?

    I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

(Edited by SDGardella on 15-Apr-04 11:26. As per the moderator's request, I've edited my original post with an updated "HijackThis" log file attachment.)
Recently, while "surfing the web", my home page, or Start page as EarthLink calls it, will not come up when I start IE. Instead I get some search page. Checking this forum I learned about hijacking malware and strongly suspect that is the problem I am experiencing now. As per one responder's suggestion (and, whoever you are, THANKS!!) I ran "HijackThis". Attached is the log generated by that program. I request that the "experts" out there review the log and let me know which entry(ies) to delete. Since running HijackThis I have also run Ad-Aware and SpyBot. Both identified some problems which I have deleted/removed (IE still does not go to my Start page though).

You assume correctly. That was the very first thing I did.

Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

Always try the easy things first.

Looking at the file attachment, the obvious things to get rid of are the "obfuscated" entries. They all also appear to have bearing on the start up pages in IE and there are also entries pointing to Earthlink startups still in the list. It appears that the newer "obfuscated" entries are overiding the initial and proper ones.
I double checked my own listings in HiJack and there were none similar to that group.

Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

I believe the problem has been solved and reapir(s) effected. MANY thanks to those who helped me out with this very frustrating event. I'd like to get my hands on the little puke(s) who threw us into that problem pit. Registry editing has always been computer "rocket science" or "brain surgery" to me, something to be avoided at any cost. But, WOPR came through, again, and saved the day (and my sanity).

Thank you VERY MUCH for being there to help.

    Hi Steve:
Glad you got it fixed. Why don't you post what it was exactly that fixed it as it will be helpful for the next person who has this problem.

Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

    Phil,

It was through the use of "HijackThis" which I downloaded as a result of my reading a previous similar thread in this forum. The poster in that thread had suggested the requester run "HijackThis" and to post the resulting log to the forum so experts in that forum could review it and make suggestions as to how to fix the problem. The downloaded program reads your Registry and shows the values in the section controlling MSIE. I followed that person's instructions and posted the resulting log to this forum.

The only thing I want to find out now is why Norton (Symantec), whose software I use on my system, has not developed a more aggressive product to handle adware & malware. I was lucky in that the web page my browser was sent to was a search page of some sort. What if it had been some porn page or worse, a page dedicated to "Barney" or some similar horror?

Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

Adware, pop-up blockers, & anti-virus apps are all different things. I haven't kept up with what each company is doing, but I use NAV for viruses, use Avant Browser or Mozilla for browsing (which have pop-up blockers), & use the adware programs that were listed in the post that you read.

However, I recall that Ken's post said to post the log in the forum related to Hijacking. Anyhow, I still don't know what exactly fixed your problem.
    Cheers,

Re: I think I've been 'Hijacked' (IE 6)

Edited by Phil Rabichow to make the link clickable - see Help #19
    Phil,

Let me take another shot at explaining the solution I found to my IE problem on this forum.

It was through the use of a program called "Hijack This" found at http://tomcoyote.com/hjt/ (I do not know how to paste links in this forum, sorry) of which I learned through an old post/response to this forum about a problem similar to mine. The program, when run on one's system, makes a log of your Registry pertaining to IE. The poster instructed readers to post the resulting log to the forum so that the forum "experts" could review it and guide the requester in making the necessary Registry changes to reclaim their Inrernet Explorer. I did as instructed and now our IE is working as it should. An additional benefit was that I also got to learn about working in the Registry, a scary thing in my book.

Hope this lifts the fog left by my earlier response to you.

    -Steve-
