Will wrokbooks open OK in Excel 97 (2002)

Sorry to ask such a dumb question, but I couldn't work out the answer from the help file!

Also, should workbooks be expected to still work OK in 97, and should VBA macros still work OK?

Excel 97, 2000, XP and 2003 all share the same file format. So each version should be able to open files saved from any other version. Of course things used that are not there yet in an older version will not be available. Some VBA commands have had parameters added to them, which may cause errors in previous version(s). SOme VBA commands are introduced in a later version and also couse compilation errors. But in general, most works.

The basic file format is the same in Excel 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003, so workbooks created in Excel 2002 should open in Excel 97. But new features have been introduced in each version; these may be lost when opening the workbook in an older version. For example, Excel 2002 allows you to assign colors to worksheet tabs, and to include graphics in page headers and footers. These features are not supported in Excel 97.

Excel VBA has also been expanded with new objects, properties, methods and events. Simple macros should run without problems in Excel 97, but more advanced code making use of the new items will fail.

Thanks guys. That was roughly what I thought the situation was. I'm fairly confident I'll have no problems with the workbooks in question, but I guess I'll find out when I try! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
