    Word opens with document 2

Using Word 2000 on Windows 2000 professional on an NT4 network -- today, for no reason I can determine, whenever I launch Word, it starts with Document 2! I thought that meant that there was more than one instance of winword.exe running, but when I look in the task manager I see only one process.

Is this just an annoyance that I can ignore. If so, that's okay, but I'd love to know why. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

    Schatzie,

You mentioned in a post in another thread, that you have customized autoopen etc. procedures - do you have global templates in your startup directory?

We're just rolling out Office 2000, and I've noticed the same issue. When Word launches, you see a quick flash of a document opening (Document 1, I presume<g>) and closing.
There's probably code in an AutoExec procedure in one of the global templates in startup, that is doing this, but I haven't had a chance to track this down yet. It's likely that there are some initial environment settings that need to be done with a document open hence the brief appearance of Document 1.

In any case it's probably safe to ignore.

    Hi schatzie,

Search for all *.tmp files and delete those you find.

We have the same issue with DocsOpen at work, and it dates back to Docs 2.5.3 on Office 95. There's nothing to worry about.

Incidently, if you close document 2 (not the app) and then create a new blank document, it will create document 3 and so on.

Thanks everyone. I'll ignore the issue; it seems innocuous enough.

    Hi schatzie,

Did you delete your *.tmp files? Even though it isn't really a problem, it does indicate that you have leftover temp files that can begin to cause problems in the future and a little "housekeeping" should be done.

Along with the *.tmp files, search for ~$*.do? (Owner/locked) files and delete those as well.

Yes I did look for *.tmp files but there were none. This PC has a brand new ghosted image on it and I had been editing some macro code for a toolbar button. It was after I did that work that I noticed this happening.

One of my coworkers did a registry hack (but I can't remember which branch) and now it's back to Document 1 again.

    Hi schatzie,

I would be interested in knowing what your coworker did in the Registry.

As I noted previously, typically this is an indication of a leftover temp file.

Another item I forgot to mention is that it can also be caused by another "hidden" instance of winword.exe running. In that case you can end the task in the Task Manager or it resolves itself if you restart your computer.
