AdAware & BargainBuddy

I mentioned this in John Gray's current thread about Spybot S&D, but I thought more of you might read it in its own thread. Yesterday I ran my AdAware Pro with a brand new definitions file and it detected something called BargainBuddy on my system. I allowed it (several entries) and the usual assortment of cookies to be removed. Now I'm trying to do some detective work to find out how it got on my computer. This link at Symantec says it has to be manually installed but CAN be carried along by some software installer. Since I know I didn't install it, I'd like to know what DID so I can notify and "boycott" whoever they are.

Looking by date in my downloaded software directory, I've determined (I think!) that the only things I've installed since 1 March are updates to Mailwasher Pro, TweakXP, WinZip 9 and DU Meter. I've already asked TotalIdea (TweakXP) and they said they didn't do it. I'll keep looking.....

If anyone knows or learns anything about this, I'd appreciate your tips here. Thanks!

Al

I don't know whether this is on- or off-topic, but Spyware Guide has a "block list" which sets a so-called "kill bit" in a whole bunch of CLSIDs, thus preventing them from running the corresponding ActiveX control in Internet Explorer. All is does (all??!) is to update the Registry. (Has anyone any experience of this mechanism??)

There's also an online scanner which may help you?

The Guide mentions BargainBuddy...

PS I have used DUMeter in the last month, but haven't fallen victim to BargainBuddy...

PPS Looking at what PestPatrol says about manual removal, I can only wish you good luck for a long afternoon.....

I'm sorry, but I can't take anyone seriously with such a silly first name...!

Re: AdAware & BargainBuddy

Thanks John. There's a lot of interesting reading on that site. Since I hardly ever use IE, except for something that doesn't "work right" in Mozilla, I'm even more puzzled. While browsing around the site, I came upon the BargainBuddy "agreement" which supposedly asks for permission to install - I NEVER remember seeing it either. The search continues. BTW, I think I'll hold off on that registry thingie, at least for awhile. While searching through newsgroups with Google, I also came upon some mention (allegation?) that the scumware may have been included in an article about Condaleeza Rice only recently. Ain't that a blast?

Edited to add: Re: "...long afternoon..." No, I'm OK - AdAware seems to have successfully removed the stinker. The only reason I'm even following up is irritation!

Hi Al:
I've recently downloaded & installed WinZip 9 without getting BargainBuddy, so I don't think they're to blame. Don't know who is though.

Ouch - I'm not gonna write to anybody else! They get very insulted. At least I'm rid of it and hopefully others who might not normally do so, will run their AdAware to see how their system looks. What's even harder to take, when you drill your way around (i.e. John's link) and eventually find the folks who developed the scum, they're so proud of what they've developed and it makes the rest of us wanna puke!

Re: AdAware & BargainBuddy

If you do happen to find what software installed Bargain Buddy, please post it. It appeared on my daughter's computer about a month ago and she insists that she did not install it. BTW, do you have Spyware Blaster installed? It will block this piece of junk (and 2855 others as of the latest database update) from being installed on your system. Thanks Al.

Re: AdAware & BargainBuddy

Scumware.com states that it can be installed through ActiveX so it may have slipped in that way.

Re: AdAware & BargainBuddy

I guess I'll probably NOT discover how it got installed but the ActiveX idea is probably the most plausible. And no, I've not had (up until now) SpywareBlaster installed, but I've just downloaded a copy and will install it as soon as I finish typing this. I've relied completely on frequent running of AdAware and SpyBot to cleanse my machine of scumware. But you're right, it will be far better to prevent the installations of crap in the first place. Thanks for the reminder boost!

What's even more irritating in this case is that I hardly ever use IE except for pages that don't "render" correctly with Mozilla, which are few. So, the likelihood of me clicking on an ad site of some kind in IE is so rare as to be astonishing. All the BargainBuddy writeups say that it is an IE add-on.
