    Coppermine Photo Gallery

    Hey all,

I wanted to share my happiness in my recent find of Coppermine Photo Gallery for websites. It's very easy to set up and use on a personal website, and it's in the public domain so it's <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>. I had it up and running on my personal website in short order. It's very full featured, and includes comments, voting, slideshows, and even e-cards, among other things. Now if I could only get my family members to take some time and upload their stuff...

I will add that customizing it the way I wanted was not as intuitive as I'd hoped, but if you know PHP at all and some basic HTML, you can do a lot with it. It's very powerful. It took me a bit of effort to make it match my site design, but now that I understand how it's put together I can make modifications quickly. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a photo gallery on their website!

Yeah, you'll be hearing from me as soon as I get some more time to browse through your pictures. I took a preliminary look but didn't have enough time to do it justice. As you may remember, I too am a big "picture poster" and my web pages are full of pages I have to manually create, using a javascript to display my photos. I'll be in touch here with questions and/or comments.

I've also wondered about other vehicles for posting photos, ever since Katie and Mike posted their honeymoon trip pix from Oz on their web pages. My javascript mechanism is a LOT of manual work!

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for sharing. I don't have a need for this kind of app right now, but I'll keep it "just in case". I'd download if it were a good app, so I'll absolutely DL it after your recommendation. Compulsive downloading... that's what we were talkin' about in another thread, right? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Mark,
Are you going to publish a book on how to use this software? It looks great, now I need to get myself a good "Host" at a reasonable price.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

A book? Not unless you know of a publisher that will pay me well. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

However, I am considering writing a user guide on how to customize the appearance and create themes. The website for Coppermine does not go into a lot of detail and certainly fell short of the mark for me. It may be something they will address in a future release but my money is on feature work, not themes.

As far as hosting, any company that provides PHP and MySQL on the back end will suffice. Check the requirements of Coppermine vs. what is offered; I think it has fairly benign requirements but if you do your homework first there is a lot less bitching involved later on. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Re: Coppermine Photo Gallery

Al, I feek your pain in the creation of picture pages. I spent far too much time customizing my own galleries, creating thumbnails and formatting static HTML pages to have the exact appearance I wanted. I never would have gotten around to adding all the extras that Coppermine has in its full download.

As I noted before, customizing the appearance was somewhat tricky, but in my response to Dave, I noted that I have considered documenting the process. If I manage to squeeze that in, I will be happy to share it - and I will make sure that I submit it to the development team. I imagine that it is documented somehwhere in their forums, but I did not take the time (not did I want to expend the effort) trying to hunt it down when that time could be spent doing it on my own.

I researched my options extensively and found a few packages that were similar but could not compete in the price arena. Perhaps for an excess of $100 USD I could have simplified my life but then I have never been one to spend my cash on something I could figure out on my own!!

That's why there are about five different photo gallery packages using up space on my hard drive right now... <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> if it were not for the fact that I am limited to three individual MySWL databases from my host, I probably would have tried them all! <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>
