Outlook doing millions of IOs just to open an item (Outlook 2002)

I have had an extreme performance problem with Outlook for a few months now. It takes minutes to start, or to open up an item such as an e-mail. Lots of things have been eliminated from consideration: add-ons, viruses, low-level disk problems, disk fragmentation, etc. Outlook is running on a PC connected to a server running Exchange 2000. Only my PC is affected.

I have just tried to use Task Manager to diagnose the problem in more detail. I first found that it is not a networking problem, since there is negligible traffic. Rather, I have found that on average, when I start Outlook or do tasks like opening up an email, it does an average of 2.7 MILLION IO reads from my hard disk. Task Manager also tells me that the average size of the file or files it is tring to read is about 160 Bytes! During this time, my CPU usage shoots up to 100%.

Hopefully with this new information someone can suggest something which will solve my problem! Thanks.

100% CPU usage sounds like one of those occasional bugs that gets fixed in a service pack. Are you fully patched up? For reference, my Help>About says: Microsoft Outlook 2002 (10.2712.4219) SP-2

Have you run scanpst.exe on your PST file(s)? What other actions have you taken?

Hopefully John's post fixes the problem. I know that if Outlook did not shut down properly, it seems to conduct some kind of lengthy scan the next time I start it up. My fault for having a half-gig PST file. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

I was thinking that a corrupt item or two might cause the I/O problem. I thought you had MANY

Yes, I have many. However, crashing Outlook doesn't seem to mess up a file unless I made a change to it during that session. (Not something I want to understand too deeply...)

Re: Outlook doing millions of IOs just to open an item (Outlook 2002)

Well, it's not a pst (or ost) file problem. I first ran scanpst on my two small psts (I mostly run off the server). No problem. Then scanpst found some errors in my offline "ost" file. I ran it another couple of times until the error messages went away. That did not fix the problem. Then I moved the contents of my two pst files to the public folder, and closed the pst files. I also turned off all offline folders. So, no pst or ost files are now accessed when I start up.

Unfortunately, that didn't solve my problem at all. I have done all the usual stuff -- disk checking (low and high level), virus checking, adware checking, careful registry scanning and repairing.

Any other ideas? Perhaps there's a way to find out which 160 Byte files is being repeatedly accessed?

    Thanks,

have you done a scandisk (chkdsk)? It sounds as though you have some corrupt files, especially since tou had .pst problems

Re: Outlook doing millions of IOs just to open an item (Outlook 2002)

Yes I have (as noted earlier in the thread).

I also ran a repair and re-install of Outlook, which didn't help. However, I did it a *second* time, this time taking the option to re-set all my options to the default ones. And that sped things up a lot (by about 5 times). It still isn't great, but it is now usable -- it only takes a minute now to open up an e-mail. I had no idea that by just choosing various Outlook options you can slow the application down so much. I still don't know which option it was that caused the damage, though.

Ah no - the thread refers to scanpst.exe.
I am suggesting a scandisk.exe or a chkdsk.exe, to verify the integrity of your disk structure and files

    His very first post states:
