MS Update problem #MMMXCII (XP sp1)

These latest updates (from 14 Apr 2004, just did it today) trashed my cable-modem internet connection. I had to roll them all back to get online.

The specific error - reported by network troubleshooter - was inability to reset the IP or DNS. Sorry if I got the alphabet soup wrong, I'm not a network weenie - just a hardware geek.

I can't say that it's a specific update problem. I have all of the patches on my machine now without any apparent problems, particularly any modem problems. I do have a DSL modem not cable but don't think that makes much difference here.
Have you tried to disable and then reinstall your modem from Device Manager?
Also try updating only one update at a time to see which one is doing you in.

Great. I was hoping it was a big honking mistake by M$. Instead, I gotta work at it.
Thanks for your advice about doing the updates one at a time.
I have a question about Device Manager (new to XP here ). My cable modem doesn't show up. My Ethernet card does, but I know that works because I could ping the modem when I couldn't reach the internet. My question is (finally): Is there someplace I don't know about where devices attached to my network card show up?

The modem itself probably won't show up directly in Device Manager, since it's on "the other side" of the Ethernet card. ( the line side ) and XP will only ID out to the first device connected. So, in order to reinstall your modem, you will have to disable the current Ecard and create a new connection to it.
You can check options and connections by clicking on Control Panel>Network Connections, where you will see the LAN and the ISP listed. There you can check the properties of each.
