    Indexing (Win XP Pro)

What is the general consensus about enabling (or disabling) the indexing service? Does this really speed things up? Or does it hinder other operations?

IF you do a LOT of searching on words within a files them this will help.
I have it turned OFF on of my machines, and I have not seen much a speed change in searching on file names.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

As Dave said, for the casual occasional searcher, not worth it. It's disabled on mine for a long time now. Don't miss it.

    Today it is called golf!

I got irritated by the disk activity that it generated. As with the others, I kill it unless I have a specific need for it (and to date, that need has not occurred).

Thanks to all the replies - I appreciate your responses. I will turn off the indexing service.

    Re: Indexing (Win XP Pro)

I have a perspective to offer. Definitely turn it off! I have some VBA code to do a file search. No matter what I did, it would not find files that I knew were there. After some detective work I realized the Indexing Service was on (I have always turned it off in the past, just didn't realize it was on with this machine). I turned it off and voila, now I can find the files I need. Apparently the index wasn't complete so the searches were really fast -- but they didn't find stuff that was there. Apparently, my machine isn't idle long enough for the indexing to complete.
