Opening Word files at last zoom size (Word XP (2002))

I would like certain Word files open up each time with the same zoom setting: for example, the last zoom setting I used when working last on the file. I often use font size 12 with zoom of 175%. But when I open the same file next time, the text is far smaller (or larger) than I had last viewed it. I have written a macro to change back to 175%. Is there any other solution?

Thanks in advance! David

The macro might be your best bet. I think Word documents are intende to open at the zoom percentage they were saved with, but I haven't been able to discover any consistency in the actual behavior.

Thanks, Hans. I'll stick to my macro until someone offers a better solution. "Consistency" is the key word in your reply: sometimes it opens at the previous zoom percent, sometimes not. Thanks anyway. David

The only times I have noticed any inconsistency from last zoom used in the file:
1. If the zoom is set to fit width - and my window is a different width to last time
2. If the zoom change was applied to an unchanged (from last save) document and then the file was closed as this final save won't store the zoom by itself
3. If there is a macro running to change the zoom on open.
Do any of these apply to you?

Thanks for your reply, Andrew. Your items 1 and 2 may well apply to me. What advice can you give to preserve the most recent zoom setting? Simply saving the document and closing it doesn't always seem to preserve the setting.

Thanks again. David

If you want the current document to open next time at a certain view and zoom:
1. Choose the Page View you want eg Normal / Page Layout
2. Set the zoom you want
3. Make ANY text edit eg delete a character and retype it
4. Save and Close

It should now open with the settings chosen in steps 1 and 2. Without at least one text edit after the first two steps, the document won't remember the zoom or page view.

Note: The zoom setting applies to a particular page view so that Normal view might be set to 100% whilst Page Layout view might be set to 25%. These settings will be remembered by the same steps.

Re: Opening Word files at last zoom size (Word XP (2002))

Thanks for your advice, Andrew. I have any number of Word files that I daily treat in the same way: open, set zoom size (usually by macro, sometimes by hand), make changes, save, and close. Next time I open, they are a different zoom size half the time. I stick to normal or page layout. No difference. Frustrating. Thanks anyway. David

In that case, I can't offer much more than commiserations. Did you have this problem in earlier versions of Word too?

Re: Opening Word files at last zoom size (Word XP (2002))

Hi David:
I've had that problem occasionally with Word 2000. It might help to open the template upon which they're based, add a character, delete it, save & close the template. Also, delete any temp files that Word has created (with Word closed). I have no documentation or reason for this, other than it seems to work...sometimes.

I'm not sure, Andrew, but I believe I did have this problem with earlier Word versions. But that was on another machine. Will keep trying. David

Thanks, Phil. How would I find that template? I believe I just created a new Word document to produce these files. I created some of these files years ago and continue to use them: for my accounts spreadsheets, for example. Thanks. David

Hi David:
If you just pressed File/New or pressed the New button on the standard toolbar, your attached template is normal. You can always see the attached template by going to Tools/Templates & Add-ins & looking at the box for the attached template.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the note on templates, Phil. I have checked my files that usually open with undesired zoom percents, and see that no template has been attached to them. I see that I'm going to have to get down Woody's fat book and do some work on templates. May ask again. Thanks until then. David

and see that no template has been attached to them.

There is always a template attached to every document. If no custom template is specified, normal should appear in the attached template box.
