Margins outside of printable area message (2000)

    Hello,

I keep getting this error in Word.
Is there any way to resolve in , so l don't have to keep pressing "YES" all the time?
    See attachment.

If you get this on every document, the margin settings for your Normal.dot are probably not correct for your current printer setup. Try the following:
    <UL><LI>Create a new blank document.
    <LI>Select File | Page Setup...
<LI>Set the margins the way you want, then click OK. If you set one or more margins outside the printable area for your printer, Word will offer to fix them; accept this. (For a laser printer, minimum values for the margins are about 0.19", but inkjet printers usually have a much larger bottom margin, of 0.5" or more.)
<LI>If necessary, select File | Page Setup... again.
    <LI>Click the Default... button.
<LI>Word will warn you that this will affect all new documents based on the Normal template. Click Yes.[/list]This will not affect existing documents; you will have to let Word fix the margins for each of them individually.

Inkjet printers are not able to print as close to the edge of a page as laser printers- especially the bottom margin.

    True.
And that's why we don't allow a bottom margin that is less than 1.5 centimeters. If it's less, we force it to that value. The code is called immediately before actual printing (and printpreview):

    Public Sub FilePrint()
    If Documents.Count > 0 Then
    With ActiveDocument.PageSetup
    If .BottomMargin < CentimetersToPoints(1.5) Then .BottomMargin = CentimetersToPoints(1.5)
    End With
    Dialogs(wdDialogFilePrint).Show
    End If
    End Sub

If l were to place this code into Word would it work and prevent the margin error being shown on screen?
Also where does the code go exactly?

Because the code sets the margin just before the print dialog is shown, there will be no error message displayed.

If you create a Sub that has exactly the same name as a Word built-in command, then your Sub will be executed instead of the built-in command. This way you can 'hijack' Word commands and replace them with your own code.

Thanks Phil for your further explanation to Justin.
I must get it into my system to do this kind of explaining myself... <img src=/S/stupidme.gif border=0 alt=stupidme width=30 height=30>

Re: Margins outside of printable area message (2000)

    Hi Justin:
This would go in either in normal.dot or another global template. You can create a global template by going to File/New.../Template. Save the tempate (you can call it global.dot e.g.)
    1. Then once it's open, press Alt+F8.
    2. Change the macros in box to global.dot.
    3. In the macros name box, type FilePrint. A dialog box will open.
    4. Paste the entire code in the box, replacing the text that's already in there.
    Sub FilePrint()

    End Sub
    5. Save the changes.

Now close Word, locate the Word Startup folder in Windows Explorer. Open another Windows Explorer window & switch to the templates folder. Drag global.dot from the templates folder to the startup folder. From then on, Jan's macro will replace the FilePrint command. If you can't follow one or more of these instructions, please post back.
    Cheers,

See <post#=365040>post 365040</post#> for the code. See <post#=365069>post 365069</post#> for an explanation of where to put the code. See star <post#=21373>post 21373</post#> for further instructions on creating macros.
    Cheers,

Thanks for taking over Phil. Couldn't do it myself; had a wonderful long weekend in Prague.
