    Changing TOC Page Numbers (2002)

Longers, I want to change the page numbers in the TOC to a box.

I've been able to change the paragraph numbers with a box bullet, having problems changing the page numbers - any ideas?

    Hi Dean:
While I'm not positive what you've done, if you're trying to put the TOC page numbers in a frame, I don't believe it can be done. The page numbers are part of a field & the TOC uses the {pageref} field to insert the page numbers.

Re: Changing TOC Page Numbers (2002)

Phil, Thanks for the reply. I want to be able to change the page number in the TOC with a Tick Box. I have a document that people have to read and I want them to tick off the TOC item in a box to indicate that they have read that section. See sample attached

    Any thoughts?

    Dean,

Per Phil's comments, it's probably impossible to get Word to generate a TOC with boxes in place of the page numbers.
You could get something like what's in your sample, by first allowing Word to generate a regular TOC, and then:

    - Select the TOC
    - Ctl+Shift+F9 to get rid of the TOC field.
    - Ctl+Spacebar to get rid of the hyperlink character style.
    - Then manually replace the page numbers with box symbols.

Maybe more work than you'd prefer, but at least you're getting Word to generate the TOC itself.

The only way I can think of to do this is to use TC fields to mark your TOC entries and then build the TOC from the TC fields. You will need to include a switch to preserve tabs as well if you want the boxes to line up.

Either that or build the TOC without page numbers, unlink it and then add the boxes.

Thanks Guys - Seems to be no painless way to do this - Looks like I'll have to do it the hard way

Re: Changing TOC Page Numbers (2002)

    Hi Dean:
One thing you can do is to put a frame to the right of the TOC. Size it small. Then open the Control Toolbar & insert a checkbox. Size it the way you want & put it just to the right of the first TOC entry. Click the property button on the toolbar & delete the caption name. Then copy the checkbox to the clipboard & paste it after each of the TOC entries.

If you have a lot of TOC entries, you can select the TOC & then use Find/Replace where:
    Find: ^13
    Replace: ^c^&

This finds the paragraph marks & replaces them with the clipboard contents (the checkbox) & itself. See attached.
