    XP Hangs (XP Home Edition)

System is a 2.66 Pentium 4 224 MB Ram AX Home edition. I have just upgraded from Win98. I have ran Anti Virus and Anti Spy Ware. Every thing seems to be running fine. No yellow (device not found) in Device Manager. System Boots well and shuts down well. Window Explorer's target is C: and response is immediate if I only navigate on C: drive but if I click on MY COMPUTER or click on D: drive then everything hangs there for a good 2 minutes and then the folder I clicked on appears! Can anyone help please. I am almost at the point of starting over with a clean install but I would surely loose some files and settings.

    Try this:
From My Computer choose Tools | Folder Options (or open it from Control Panel), click View tab and uncheck under Avanced Settings "Automatically Search for network folders and printers".

Also stop Indexing service and set it to Manual (Start | Run, type SERVICES.MSC and hit Enter; choose "Indexing" from the list, from Action menu choose Properties etc.)
If you want to learn more about Services, see Windows XP Home and Professional Service Configurations

The only folder that is brutally slow to open on my computer is

    cocuments and SettingsMy Username

I don't know why it should be so slow, and once it does open all of the subfolders open rapidly. Maybe the same solution would work for both of us. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Purge Internet Explorer cache (open Internet Properties from Tools menu in Internet Explorer or from Control Panel; under "Temporary Internet files" press "Delete files" button and check "Delete all offline content" on the next screen).

You can also delete all temporary files in your TEMP folder (Cocuments and SettingsYour UsernameLocal SettingsTemp - Local Settings folder is hidden) directly or using Disk Cleanup utility (Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup).

And you can use Check Disk utility to check and fix errors on your hard drive: click Start | Run, type
    CHKDSK /F
hit Enter, click Yes to run Check Disk after restarting and restart your computer.
