    2-computer network problem

I recently got an XP computer, and I set up a home network with an older W98SE system using Ethernet cards in both and cables, one with T and R crossed. When I first got it set up, I managed to transfer some files and folders from old to new, using the Networking Wizard, but now I can't see old C: drive files on the new computer, except for the ones I originally transferred. And, alas, I missed some.

Edited to add: Oops, I forgot: its XP Pro

Now a couple of questions. What do you mean that you can't see the files on the computer? Does it boot correctly to Windows? Concerning the network setup, I've never used a direct connection with crossover cable, so I'm shooting in the dark here. In the Networking properties of both computers, is DHCP enabled, the Workgroup name the same? Let's make sure that both computers are booting OK first and then go from there. Meanwhile, others will probably chime in.

Thank you. I can see, from the new computer, the name I assigned to the older computer. In it, I can see all the folders I transferred the first time, but that's not the complete list shown by Explorer on the old computer. Both boot fine. I'll have to check if I have DHCP enabled when I get home. This is at my office. Yes the workgroup is the same for both, MSHome. The screen in the Wizard shows a radio button for transfer with that cable, but I can't find any followup on what to do. after that.

Just to check, do you have the NetBEUI protocol installed on both machines? You can use TCP/IP but I've had quicker success with NetBEUI. You'll find it buried deep in the XP installation disk. Also, is the Internet Connection Firewall off or on on the XP machine?

I think I have TCp/IP, but I'll check when I get home this PM. Office still on W2000. I'll check the firewall too.

    Re: 2-computer network problem

Sorry for not posting back. I had the network working more or less. I could see the Windows98 computer on the XP computer, and vice-versa. I could print from the 98 computer through the printer attached to the XP.
But now I've another problem. The XP computer went back to the dealer (my stepson). Upon its return, the network doesn't work. Both computers report their NICs as OK, the green lights work OK on each computer, and they go out when I disconnect the cable. I can see the files on each computer, but not across the link. As a further clue, the XP computer shows the link disconnected when I turn off the 98 computer.

    Any thoughts, anyone?

Partial success. After doing the Network Wizard again, on both computers, I can now work from the old computer to the new computer. Good enough. Thanks for many tips.

    Re: 2-computer network problem

Oops, new problem. I changed the printer attached to the new computer, the XP computer. I replaced an HP 5550 with a 1210C, printer/scanner/copier. Although I have set it for sharing, and that name shows up on the old computer, the printer doesn't. That is, I cannot print from the old computer to the new computer.

Dave, since I really don't know what that is, I suspect I didn't. However, I did do exactly what I did with the old printer, which was basically nothing. I did enable sharing, as I said.

Windows XP will go out and Auto find the printers by default. Any of the eariler versions will NOT, you will need to go to each NON XP machine and run the "Add printer" wizard and find and install the network printers.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: 2-computer network problem

Thanks, Dave. Now all I have to do is to get my CD drive tray to open on the W98 machine. Paper clip didn't work, repeated button pushing didn't work. Fortunately, it stuck with no CD in it. A shopping I will go...
