MS not supporting adware

This is just an FYI- yesterday my dell laptop que'd me to download critical updates. After I restarted the system, it couldn't find a couple of library files and just hung. 2 hours on the phone with dell and I was able to get it back up. They said that MS no longer supports adware as of 2 days ago....I have spybot and adaware loaded....I am surprised no one else has posted on this. I am still running into missing file problems...ugh!

I have Windows XP with the latest updates installed (dated 14th April) and ad-aware runs normally. It seems your problems may lie elsewhere. What files are being reporting as being missing? This may help us track down the cause of your problem.

I didn't know that MS had to support adware in order for it to work. I wouldn't trust Dell's support staff these days to change a light bulb. I'd bet that if you ran a scan with both AdAware and Spybot that both would work. They are independent, stand-alone programs and require NO support from MS.

If Dell's staff hasn't made too many changes, you could try to use system restore to roll back to before the updates and see if that resolves your issue. If things were working as they should before the updates then it would seem to me that if you remove the updates it will work as before. The only thing "critical" about MS updates is the condition that some of them can leave your system in !!!

Re: MS not supporting adware

Hmmm...using XP, should know better than to trust Dell, but at 11pm last night it made sense!
The latest error I am getting is when opening outlook, "The procedure entry point_GETIUMS@4 could not be located in the dynamic link library msdart.dll. It takes 5 times to close it. From what I can tell, outlook runs fine after.

As for the system restore....this is my work laptop and I didn't set it up...the button was not checked to go to last good log in.

BTW- you guys are awesome. I keep track of your posts and it has kept me out of a lot of trouble...usually!

Re: MS not supporting adware

msdart.dll is a part of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components). The error could be related to damaged or missing files. You can download and install the latest version from here

Alternatively you can try the MDAC component checker to see if it highlights any faults.

Re: MS not supporting adware

If it's your work laptop, you might want to let your company's tech support people take a look at it. If they set it up, and left important system functions unavailable to you the user, then they should have the "honor" of getting things straight.

Just my of course.

Tony- great link....did the trick! Thanks bunches. The checker tool is pretty cool too. Nothing highlighted after, so it looks like I am GTG.
Appreciate it!

Doc, sometimes it is easier to do it yourself! It avoids this!
Next time though!
Appreciate the input though!

Surprising, since they recommend it here, (almost at the bottom in a box to the right)!

Some Well Known Tools That May Help Detect and Remove Unwanted Software
Lavasoft Ad Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy (S&D)

John,
, I really should have known better than to believe Dell. (after all, why take the blame when you can point at someone else)
It learned my lesson....don't update until Woody's gives the all clear and check what is being updated first!

Appreciate the feedback!
