Data acquisitioning in excel (Excel 98 )

I have a small instrument at work that can generate numbers ( in this case they are ink density figures to be exact ) They are generated by press a button and the figure is generated ie 1.20 , press again and another is generated ... fairly simple. .

Presently I use Hyperterminal and get the numbers that way, then copy and paste them into Excel. The instrument is connected to the serial port by cable. Hence my question is .... any idea if a VB is available to generate this number into an excel cell doing away with Hyperterminal. Something that opens the serial port, allows data to go through, is collected by Excel directly.

I've looked around the web but what's offered are complete packages for DAQ involving graphics, multi ports etc., but all I want is a single data point at a time to Excel, the other cosmetic things I can do later

    Hope you have some ideas.
    Many thanks in advance.

At Dataq.com they have data acquisition tutorial and also a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>copy of WinDaq/Lite, though you must register to download it.

Googling "data acquisition" excel free gives many hits.

    Thanks for the inform.
I've looked at other DAQs like Stamp, Parallax but found them a little hard going. This on you recommend seems easier to read plus like the idea of them having a forum established. I'll see what trouble I can get into with this one . Many Thanks.

Thanks for your input. Yep, just learned something new after going to this site. Got one step closer to understanding how MSComm works.
I'll need to play around with some of the code before asking more questions for this one. Do you know any other easy to read sites that can help me with MSComm. Much thanks
