    Phantom page break (Word 2000)

In the first page footer of my document is a {PAGE} field that returns the value of "0". The Second page footer returns a value of "1". I have deleted all of the section breaks using the Replace Tool but when I move the insertion point from page 1 to page 2 the status bar indicates that it is moving from Section 1 to Section 2. In normal view no section break is shown only an automatic page break.
    Help please.

Re: Phantom page break (Word 2000)

Move to the start of the document (Ctrl+Home)
Select Edit |Find... or press Ctrl+F.
Type ^b in the Find What box (or click More, then Special, and select Section Break from the list.)
    Click Find Next.
If Word complains that the item has not been found, you have a problem.
Otherwise, cancel the Find dialog and - without changing the selection - press Delete.
This should get rid of the section break.

I'm not sure what caused it, but can you select everything except the last paragraph mark & copy it into a new document. There may be some document corruption. You'll have to redo the header/footer.

Can you have a look on the Insert menu at Page Numbers..., Format... and check that Start At has not been set to 0

Re: Phantom page break (Word 2000)

I realize your problem was solved, but something to check for if this happens again -- I had 16 pages missing from a document once, pages changed from 1 to 17 and I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why. Turns out someone had been tracking changes but not showing them -- they weren't visible and I didn't think to look for that. After I accepted all changes, page numbers were okay.

Thanks Nancy, I will keep my eyes out for that.
