    Outline v Subtotal (2000+)

    Hi Loungers,

To some degree, Outline seems to provide some of the same functionality as Subtotals. For example, once you've created Subtotals and have the outlining at the left, of what use would Outlining be?

I know that Outlining can be used in places where Subtotals can not - for example, grouping rows in a pivot table. Subtotals can't be used for that.

But if I had a table with rows and cols that was sorted by a "primary" field (like the "For each change" in Subtotals), other than getting an extra row for the Subtotals (since there seems to be no way to use Subtotals w/o some subtotal statistic), what would be the difference between Outline and Subtotal?

    TIA

    Fred

    OK - I'll bite <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

One obvious difference is that Outllne also works for columns.
It is easy to imagine a sheet, with subtotals, to also have a horizontal grouping like months, grouped into years.

A less obvious difference is that Outlines are "generic" and do not need to include totals - they can simply be a convenient way to hide detail.
For example, one may have a list of detailed comments about a "big-picture" item and use Outline to group them.

Outline does not require a "key" to make the breaks - they're hand driven. Subtotals uses some key field to know where to subtotal.

And the biggie - subtotals destroys a decent "database" structure of like-rows of data - if you use it you tend to specifically need to not use other features of Excel that rely on ordered structure.
