File recovery software needed

Other than the suggestions given in this post, does anyone have any recommendations for a program to retrieve some Word 2K docs mysteriously deleted following a power cut?

Freeware is preferable, but if it costs a few beans, so be it.

The important thing (in old DOS-speak) is whether the directory entries and former file area have been overwritten by running something else. If they have, your chances of complete success are v. tiny, and of moderate success are low.

How about the paid-for Execsoft Undelete?

PS I won't say a word about backup...

Ita, esto, quidcumque...

They _shouldn't_ have been overwritten. I got a call last night from the owner who explained what had happened, then added that he hadn't done anything more than shut down and call me. He also reported that there were multiple shortcuts for the same programs that had appeared on the desktop. I asked him to look for a directory called 'FOUND.000' or similar, just in case Scandisk had picked up these lost docs, but nothing doing.

Of course he hasn't backed up. Quote: "I've never had a problem with lost files before..."

Here's a freeware program that I've only used once or twice, but you might want to download it just in case: http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/uk/welcome.htm
(If the page comes up in German, there should be a language box you can check)

Edited to add: Sorry, I didn't realize that this program was ALREADY mentioned in the thread you linked to!

Al,

Better to mention it again than not at all! Seems this is what I'm looking for and there's a freeware version available too. I'll give it a whirl this weekend.

Data recovery is a very specialized area.

If the files are of reasonable/significant value, then the only thing I would recommend would be to y=use one of the better known data recovery services. In particular http://www.ontrack.com.

And, of course, get the client to do real backups with a product as least as gpood as Retrospect http://www.dantz.com.
