CCleaner

Wondering if anyone else has tried out this tool. It seems like a fairly comprehensive coverage of all the "junk" items worthy of scrubbing (manually or on startup) but it fails on the tough ones on my 98SE setup. Specifically, it doesn't seem to be able to clean up the temporary internet files properly - my index.dat file remained at several hundred KB, rather than dropping back to the 32KB "empty" status, and none of those strange randomly-named subfolders under the Content.IE5 folder (or the files therein) were touched. The only way I've managed to scrub this junk myself is by using a batch file from "real" DOS mode and DELTREEing the lot. (I may have had to fiddle with ATTRIB too).

It's disappointing that this new program doesn't perform in this capacity, since I think it's aimed at the right targets. But it could be just something at my end. I'd be interested in the results others may have had using it, especially WRT temporary internet files.

I found the tool only a couple of days ago, so I haven't had much of an opportunity to test it because I've started using it very conservatively. I did, however, check the index.dat box, and on the next boot, it did clean that file.

    Re: CCleaner

It just dawned on me that my temp int files sit on a partition other than C:. This program might not look that hard for their location, and assume the default - might explain things. I may write to the author on this one, since I think it's a promising program in concept.

    cheers

    Hi Alan,

I'm sure you already know this, but there was a discussion a loooooong time ago which might be of use to get rid of Temporary Internet Files: Post 173197 & replies to it.

I can hardly tell the difference myself... I'm trying to update my AV to protect me from incoming BALL files, but I can't find any reference anywhere!

    Re: CCleaner

Thanks for that link - some interesting info from R2 there. I use basically the same methods (.BAT file) but the program in question has appeal for the person who runs the community group I'm helping out, who wouldn't know a .BAT file from a .BALL file . I've written the author regarding the location of the TIF folder, so hope I'll get a response.

    Alan

Edited - I just received a response from the author, thanking me for pointing out the possiblity of a non-default location of the TIF folder, and that this would, indeed, cause the problem. He says that this will be addressed in the next version of the program.
