    Killing Auto-Run (SR-1)

Is there a registry tweak or other way to permanently stop Windows from loading auto-run or searching for files when I load a CD or attach media via the 1394 or USB bus? Selecting Take No Action (every time) doesn't help. Thanks.

One way to achieve this is by using TweakUI. It includes an option within the "My Computer/AutoPlay/Types" section to enable/disable autoplay for CD & DVD drives and for removable media like CompactFlash.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;155217 has a solution for Windows 2000 and I suspect it may also work for XP.

    For Windows XP:

    1. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer
    2. Right-click the icon representing your CD drive
    3. From pop-up menu choose Properties
    4. Click AutoPlay tab
    5. For each type of content choose an action (or "no action") or "Prompt me each time" option
    6. Click Apply, OK
