Firewalls

We have a wireless network - Microsoft's MN 730 -- in our home. The "book" says the 730 has a firewall built in --

So do I need another like ZoneAlarm in addition? 'Cause I see no way to disable the built in firewall, so it is a "both" choice.

Anybody gone down this road ahead of me?

Regards,
Chuck Billow

I probably shouldn't answer your post, Chuck, since I don't have any wireless experience. But if the concept is anything at all like the "usual" wired NAT router/switch, the answer is probably YES, you should install a software firewall. My Linksys router (NAT) calls itself something of a built-in firewall also, but I think the major thing most of us worry about is OUTBOUND traffic like phone home kinds of stuff. You need a software firewall that will let YOU control who or what software is "allowed" to access the internet. You can find some of the favorites by doing a search in The Lounge rather than re-hashing them all here.

Al:

That's what I had thought... but I sure am anxious to prevent any recurrence of my last virus episode...

Thanks...

Well then, don't forget your choice of a good virus prevention program! Between a hardware AND software "firewall," virus detection/protection and malware programs like AdAware and so on, it's amazing what lengths we have to go to in order to be resonably safe from dirt bags! And that's not even counting the measures we have to take just to keep our PCs humming along at peak efficiency. Good luck.

Re: Firewalls

I'm with Al...regardless of what the network has in hardware, there's no substitute for a software firewall right behind it. Likely there is a big difference between what is in the network hardware and what you can download for , most significantly the fact that the Microsoft stuff is probably not what is called Stateful Inspection and software firewalls are.

I'm only gonna say it once...stay away from ZoneAlarm! There are much better alternatives for the same "price."

Mark:

You may only say it once... but now, let's talk... I've GOT ZA... have had for the last few years...

So what's wrong with it, and then what's better?

Regards,
Chuck

Re: Firewalls

I've been grumbling about ZA in the Lounge for a while, just about any time I see it mentioned. I've had a multitude of problems with it. But rather than open old wounds, take a look at this thread for starters. If it works for you and you're happy with it, change might not be in order, but I've always found that Sygate's offering was the best around - although not as pretty.

Chuck,
Just to reinforce BigAL & Mark, make sure you have the full battery of software firewall, antivirus, anit-scumware installed and up-to-date. If you've got something installed already for AV or firewall and are happy with it stick to it.
