Dowloading critical updates?

I sometimes have the odious task of repairing various PC's in my area which all too often require a fdisk, reformat and reloading of the O/S. Most are either Win 98SE or ME. And invariably the owners are on a dialup connection. To try and get the myriad critical updates takes hours upon end. Is there a way I can download these updates to CD on my own system; I am running Win XP, so I can then simply install them on those machines from that disc?

Jeff,
Why not order the Miscrosoft Security Update CD that is good for XP,2000,ME and 98?
It will give you all of the updates up to 10/2003 and while it isn't all of them it sure is a good start.

Order the CD at Security CD

You certainly can. Go to this MS page , select the operating system, and then download and save the updates.

Bob,

I ordered this CD back on February 23. It was allegedly shipped on March 30th. It has yet to arrive. When it does, it will surely help things out. I did not realize that it applied to ALL 9.x and NT systems as when I ordered it, I had to choose which O/S I was using. Thanks for that additional information.

Jeff,

You really have to be patient. I wasn't. I ordered it once and it said 6-8 weeks for delivery. That came and went so I ordered another one. After the order, the first one came in and the second just now arrived. So I now have a backup for the backup?

You also get a trial CD for CAI's EZ armor, Firewall and AV. I tried the firewall and it's a CLONE of Zone Alarm.

Bob,

Yeh, that "patience" stuff..... What's funny is that I ordered the Office Update CD a couple of weeks after I ordered the Windows CD and it arrived 3 weeks ago.

As far as the Firewall and AV... well, I have been using Norton AV (SystemWorks Pro) for 7 years, updating all but this last time for reasons not worthy of mentioning . And I use Outpost Pro, which I will most likely never abandon, especially after having previously purchased ZoneAlarm Pro and finding it full of bugs, providing minimal to no support, etc. But the Critical Updates CD I am most interested in and will use with great appreciation.

Are you using Outpost Pro or Outpost free?

Re: Downloading critical updates?

Denbar,

I'm using Outpost Firewall Pro (2.1 303/314). I'm an official Beta Tester for Agnitum for this firewall. This may cause some to think I am biased and that would be true to the extent that I really believe that this product is by far the finest product of its kind, both in quality, performance and service from the company, based upon my own experience and also from working with others who are using it. I also believe in the old adage, "Different strokes for different folks." If ZoneAlarm works well for someone, then great. It is a very good product too. I just happen to think that Outpost is better, not to mention it works flawlessly for me, even on a very unique system.

Dave,

They really push the time envelope right out to the max 8 weeks. Has it been at least that long yet?
Both will probably come in on the same 20 mule train post office wagon.

Jeff,
For Win98 SE have a look at this Unofficial 98 SE service pack. I run XP Pro so I don't have any experience with it nor do I know how good/complete it is.

Re: Dowloading critical updates?

Apparently you can only order the CD in some countries. For Spain, all I get is instructions to activate the "Security Server" for my Internet connections - presumably that's the firewall, right?

Re: Dowloading critical updates?

Is that what the Spanish link says?
Not understanding Spanish, I can't tell what is says, but why would they have a link to the Security CD if it only tells you something else?
Would an English version be OK or not?
