    Templates (XP)

Is there a way you can open a template that is saved on your desktop through word and not have the original template open. I know if I double click on the template on my desktop it will work fine. However, if I try the open command in Word it opens the template for edits.

File | Open... means open for editing. To create a new document from a template, you must use File | New...
In the New Document task pane, click Choose document... in the "New from existing document" section.
Select Desktop in the "Look in" dropdown list, then select the template, and click Create New.

If you right-click the template (filename.DOT) on your desktop, you'll see that the default (bolded) action on the shortcut menu is New, not Open. This is why you get different behavior from double-clicking the file and choosing File>Open from inside Word.
