    installing Internet Explorer (6)

I installed, from a purchased CD from Microsoft, Internet Explorer on a friend's computer which already had Netscape on it. IE installed but cannot find the internet - in other words, it doesn't work. Is there something else that I needed to do other than just install the software - to set it up, etc? I have gone to Microsoft's website but they don't seem to address this particular problem. Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Re: installing Internet Explorer (6)

I'm guessing that you are seeing a white page with the text Page not found and at the bottom, something about cannot find the DNS server.

The first thing to try is to run the Internet Connection Wizard and see if it corrects the problem. I presume Netscape works without a problem? And have you considered setting your friend up with something like FireFox, which IMHO is a far better browser? Internet Explorer will still need to be present to use Windows Update and a few select other sites, but I think that if there's going to be a transition, it might be time to try FireFox instead.

Everthing you said was right - I see the white page, etc. I tried the wizard and that didn't work. I tried checking tools, connection, set up and that doesn't work. Yes, Netscape works. Unfortunately, my friend wants Explorer and it makes no sense to me that it won't connect up. Thanks for the help though.

If you haven't gone too far with other program installs. I would suggest a "clean Install" of XP.

    Reformat C:,
    reinstall XP from scratch.

    Re: installing Internet Explorer (6)

Unfortunately, this is an older computer - and somebody, for some unknown reason, uninstalled Explorer at some point. I am beginning to think that there was a glitch that happened when Explorer was uninstalled and that is why the newly installed one isn't working. Any thoughts on this?

    Re: installing Internet Explorer (6)

Well, firstly: what version of Windows? And which version of IE did you attempt to install? Some versions of Internet Explorer allow for a repair installation, on Windows XP it can be done but requires a little fiddling around.

If you have the ability I would attempt to remove and reinstall Internet Explorer. Also, depending on the version of Windows, there may be other tactics you can use.

She has Windows 98. I got the latest IE, which I believe is version 6.

Yes, I can uninstall Explorer and reinstall - that is what I am going to try tomorrow.

    Re: installing Internet Explorer (6)

May I butt in with a supplementary? I'm happy with Mozilla and Opera, and I'm thinking of uninstalling IE. I'm running Windows XP Home and IE6. Am I likely to run into any snags?

Windows Explorer, Outlook Express, Outlook, and various other parts of the system require certain Internet Explorer components. Thus, I'm not sure you can install very much of the browser, and if you do, things might mysteriously break. I'd read widely on this before doing it. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
