cross referencing paragraph numbers

In an attempt to cross reference paragraph numbers, we've run into a problem. We want to have just the paragraph number inserted "7.03(e)", but regardless of the option chosen(paragraph number, full context, no context), when inserting the reference into let's say section 6, we get the full text: "section 7.03(e)". The word "section" is part of the numbering to which the style is linked, i.e. it's text before the number is inserted when defining the "number format". Does anyone know if it's possible with the way the styles are set up (don't want to change those), to cross reference just the paragraph number, and not the word "section"?

Re: cross referencing paragraph numbers

Without looking up my tip and based on my memory : After inserting your cross reference, use Alt+F9 to display the codes of the cross reference - right after the number insert insert "t" - without the quotes of course. Hit Alt+F9 again to return to normal view. Now highlight the cross reference & hit F9 to update the field. HTH. [Can do a .pdf of my help tip and can send on if this isn't clear.]

Thanks so much. I know I've used switches for other field codes, however I don't have a good reference for all that are available, and I find Word's help is not very thorough on the topic of switches. Do you have a good reference source for switches?? a book, or online somewhere?

Generally, I've found the best resource to be Insert / Field and then once you've selected the fields click Options. All the switches which work with a given field are there with a description of each.

Re: cross referencing paragraph numbers

I did find back in early '97 a Que book called "Special Edition: Using Microsoft Word97" that was really very helpful re inserting field code switches. (They used to have a website Office 97 Resource Center but it is now defunct, I believe.) If I find anything in terms of a reference source I'll post it or send it on.

I think that's the one by Bill Camarda. If so, both the one for Word 6 & Word 2000 also have a good explanation of switches & using fields. There is some misinformation regarding styles, however.

Re: cross referencing paragraph numbers

Hi Phil,
Sorry for omitting the authors names: they are Ron Person and Karen Rose. Ron had written more than 20 books for Que as at 1997 and could then be reached at http://www.ronperson.com/ (don't know if this link is still current since the copyright is 1997!) and Karen 6 books. I found the book to be quite informative - better than a lot around at that time (NO, NO! Not YOU - I didn't find out about WOW and Word Annoyances until '98 or '99]. But as with most MS Office products the real learning process is trial/error and experimentation to arrive at an understanding of "How Word/Microsoft" works and this is especially true of Word.

Re: cross referencing paragraph numbers

Hi BAM:

I haven't used Word 97 much, so I can't compare, but, in Word 2000, I've found the "?" button in the Insert/Field dialog box to give me some context sensitive help on the fields listed in the right hand pane. Also, the right click & choosing "What's this" gives the same info. Sometimes it lists the switches & sometimes it doesn't. Was Word 97 different?
