    Windows 2003

A friend emailed me to ask this question, "How can I find out if a computer game that states "can be used on Windows 2000 or Windows XP", can be used on Windows 2003?" I appreciate an answer. I don't play the latest games so I am not sure of the answer. Thank you.

What is Windows 2003? The latest version is XP.

    Re: Windows 2003

There is no desktop version of Windows 2003, as far as I know, only a server version, so I don't know why your friend would play a game on it. Machines running Windows 2003 will in general not be equipped with the state-of-the-art video card, sound card etc. required by recent games, so although any game that runs on Windows 2000 and XP is probably compatible with Windows 2003, your average server machine may simply not be equipped for it.

Thank you. My friend just bought a brand new Dell desktop last week and her children are wanting to buy games. She is afraid of purchasing the product, only to find out it won't run on the new computer. I will pass on your information to her. Thank you.

Ask your friend to right-click My Computer and select Properties. A screen similar to this attachment will show exactly which version of Windows is installed.

    Re: Windows 2003

Did their Dell come with Windows Server 2003? That would be strange...but Windows Server 03 can definitely be made to play games; it's important to remember that it is tuned as a server and not a workstation, which means that it is not as responsive to foreground activity as Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional would be. If memory serves, you also need to install DirectX on Win2003, but again...make sure that's what they are getting first!

If it's not something embarrassing or private, it's nice to share the "answer" with other Loungers, just in case someone else runs into this same question.
