System hangs when shutting down dialup connection

This post may not be under the correct heading but not sure of the cause. I have a new notebook PC with XP Home installed. Access to internet via the internal dialup modem was fine ...... until I installed Office 2003 Pro. Since then when I attempt to disconnect the dialup connection via the Connection Status window the system hangs. The only way to shut down is to hold the Power Key down until the unit powers off. On power up Scandisk runs but there no errors logged to point to the possible cause. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks in anticipation..... Alank.

    Hi Alan,

    Welcome to The Lounge !! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

When you say " I attempt to disconnect the dialup connection via the Connection Status window", are you right clicking on the internet connection icon in the System Tray and choosing "Disconnect" or choosing "Status" and then disconnecting from the resulting Status Window ??

    Dr W.
    Thanks for your reply...

Yes, I am right clicking on the internet connection icon in the System Tray and choosing "Disconnect". At this point - selecting Disconnect - I have already closed IE and Outlook. Regards, Alank .

Try choosing Status and see if you get any helpful information about your connection from the resulting dialogue box and it's sub menus

    DocWatson,

Thanks for your reply. I have been distracted by other things so apologise for not getting back before this.
I am afraid to say I don

Re: System hangs when shutting down dialup connection

    Hi All,

It has taken a while but I am happy to report a solution to this problem has been found. The problem was in the modem driver and installing an updated driver has cured the system hanging on modem disconnect fault. Many thanks to all who offered advice!!

    Regards, Alank. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
