Office XP developer upgrade (XP Developer)

I have Office XP Developer with Frontpage 2002 but not Publisher. I need to upgrade to 2003. Is there an upgrade version available or must I buy a full version? And which one do I buy, Professional ?. I'd like to add Publisher but will an upgrade do that? Or do I buy it separately? And, the version I have now has SQL Server 2000 and Exchange Server 2000 which I don't want to have disabled by installing an upgrade. Upgrading to 2003 could not be more confusing to me now than if the confusion was deliberate. I guess my question is two-fold 1. Is there an upgrade version? Or do I need the full version? and 2. Should I worry about not having Publisher and somehow disabling SQL Server and Exchange during and upgrade or install? Thanks for any help!!

Re: Office XP developer upgrade (XP Developer)

If I recall correctly, Microsoft did away with the developer edition of Office for Office 2003. Instead, MS would be most pleased if you would purchase Visual Studio and Visual Studio Tools for Office. This might be overkill for your needs, but I have no personal experience with any of it as I am still using Office XP.

If you don't need the dev tools, you might be able to install your favorite flavor of Office 2003 while having Publisher 2002 still functional. There have been some posts about coexistence and the new more intelligent installer. Hopefully those haven't drifted too far down the board.

    (1) You are eligible for the upgrade version of any flavor of Office 2003<blockquote><hr>Determine whether your current version of Microsoft Office Pro qualifies you for the $329 US upgrade price {for Office 2003 Professional}. The following products qualify:
    <UL><LI>Microsoft Office XP
Office XP Developer, Office XP Professional with FrontPage

At this point the upgrade worries me! I'm actually happy with xp, but several clients are going to 2003 and don't want them to think I'm "behind the times". (I just hate to be caught off guard about a feature I haven't seen, don't have and don't use.)

The upgrade packages contain the same programs, they just look for a earlier version before installing.

As an alternative, you might consider installing Virtual PC from Microsoft, and then install your 2003 Office under a separate XP install under Virtual PC. That lets you switch back and forth from version to version, though there is a performance hit - it also takes lots of RAM and hard drive space.

Be careful when u purchase your upgrade - all the ones I have seen include Publisher but NOT FrontPage

There is an Office XP Developer Edition, but not an Office 2003 Developer Edition. Does that help at all?

That certainly DOES clear things up. Can I still get XP Developer? I looked all over MS website, I didn't find it.

Microsoft hides the "previous version" information well...

The full package is $748 at AtomicPark.com, and the upgrade version is $530 at Staples.com, at this moment... but it probably will sell out in the near future, as it's not a high volume product.

We've not had much luck in recently trying to purchase the XP Developer package - vendors indicate they have it, but when you order it, you get the out-of-stock message, and they typically cancel your order. Unfortunately I can't offer any suggestions.

Another vendor that ostensibly has both the full version (699.95 USD) and upgrade version (499.95 USD) of Office XP Developer available for sale is:

    SoftwareMedia.com - XP Developer

I cannot attest to actual availability of the product.
