    Shortened New Document (W2003)

All of a sudden the blank document that appears upon opening Word has the top margin cut off. In other words the page is short, and the insertion point appears at the very top of the shortened page. Turning Header/Footers on and back off results in a normal looking page.

I've tried deleting Normal.dot and re-opening Word to no avail.

    Any suggestions?

Do you use Print Layout view and has your template defaulted to Normal view?

If that isn't it, look for this setting, perhaps under Tools>Options>View: White space between pages

If that isn't it... maybe a screen shot?

I would tick "white space between pages" in the View tab of Tools | Options... You can also click the gray bar immediately below the tool bars to toggle this option.

    Select File | Page Setup...
Is there anything unusual in the Margins or Paper tab (standard US Letter size?)

Thanks Hans, the "White space ..." check box did it. I had never even noticed that option before, and had no idea what it was about. Goes to show that one should try out all the options to see what the effects are. How it got turned off I don't know, and it had to have gotten that way in my Normal.dot.

It gets turned off and on by double clicking in between pages when in Print Layout. This shows or hides the headers and footers to save uneccessary space when editing the files.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by jscher2000 on 29-Apr-04 19:57. Cropped photo so it is less margin bending)</P>Yep! It's in Print Layout view. Brand new Normal.dot (modified slightly from the standard to use 1" margins all around and Centurey Schoolbook 11 font).

    White space not checked.

To reiterate, it always opens in this condition, and I can correct it by turning Headers/Footers on and back off.

Screen shot attached (altho it doesn't show Insertion point which is at the very top of the page 1" in from the left.

    Wierd, Huh?
