    Windows Installer (Office 2002 SP2, Windows 2000 Professional SP4)

Every time I open Word, Windows Installer appears and tells me it's installing some Word features. Cancelling doesn't work. With a few other applications, Installer also appears--in those instances, I can cancel. The process doesn't take more than 10-15 seconds, but it's irritating. One KB article recommends three resolutions, but they apply to Office 2000. None of them work in Office 2002. I've also uninstalled and reinstalled Office and updated it to SP2 with no effect. Short of disabling Installer, does anyone have other suggestions?

Just a guess, but you could go through the install program again & make sure that you have the components you want set to Run from computer. Also, if you have more than one version of Office on the computer, I think (but don't know for sure) that this happens as Office applications re-register.

Usually such behavior occurs when you have more than one user profiles and you install Office from AutoRun feature or Windows Explorer, NOT from Installation mode (Control Panel).

Try to re-install Office from Control Panel (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add New Programs | CD or Floppy | Browse and point it to Setup or MSI file on CD or your installation point).

Phil's comment about multiple versions of Office is correct. See this Knowledge Base article (reference to this problem is down near the end of the article).

Thanks Phil and John. I'll check out the KB article when I have time.
