    Firewalls (6.0)

I just upgraded, finally, from dial-in to DSL. I run Zone Alarm (ZA) on my PC. One thing I've notice that I am now getting ads that I never got when I dialed in even when I am not using IE. But I realize that once the computer is turned on my DSL is connected to the internet whether using IE or not. I thought ZA would have stopped those ads from coming into my PC and it didn't. I have been upgrading the ZA software but they still get through. Is ZA weak and do I need another firewall? Thanks loungers!

Sounds like you have same adware or spyware on your machine. Better get and run "Ad-aware" and "Spybot - Search & Destroy". These are both free downloads, but they both require you to update their databases on a regular basis (same as your anti-virus definitions). There are lots of threads dealing with this subject - search for "adware" or "spyware".

If you are running WinXP or Win2k make sure that the Windows Messenger service is disabled unless you are on a network that uses that service. Note: the messenger service has nothing to do with either of the MS IM programs Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. The messenger service is used mostly to broadcast messages on a corporate network and is seldom needed.

ZoneAlarm has a general concept of zones, so you want to make sure your DSL connection is not a trusted zone. I've only tried the Pro version, which lets you write more specific rules. In the free version, I'm not sure what you do to tighten up your security once you've applied the Internet zone setting.

If you are running on DSL, as a general precautionary measure, yuou should already have a hardware firewall. A home router (I use Netgear) can supply this function. You can then configure yoiurself to run entirely in stealth mode. This may reduce your visibility to random ads - as in stealth mode you will not be visible to potential intruders. HTH

Zone Alarm will also allow you to run in full Stealth mode without a hardware firewall.
I'm on DSL with ZA and all ports are running stealth.

For the record: are you talking about the Free version or the Pro? Also, does it allow you to open any one of your Ports selectively (i.e. NAT)?

    Re: Firewalls (6.0)

I'm using the free version. I don't think it will allow individual port selection for opening or closing ports selectively. Seems that's one of the features of the Pro version. But the free one works fine for me.

I'd say, welcome to the bad side of broadband. I would guess that since you went broadband, you have visited many more sites than before - hundreds of opportunities to have little bits of spyware dumped on your system, popups and popunders, and other sorted malware.

I agree to use SpyBot and AdAware (in that order) making sure to check for upgrades before running.

(I caution everyone about SpyBot - they are really falling behind on their updates - hope they stay in business)

You might want to look into a popup stopper - the Google toolbar has one built in and seems pretty good - and it is free.

    Good luck.

    Bill,
You aren't responding to my post are you?
    Should go to Omega3's original <post#=368326>post 368326</post#> I think. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Yes - I forget when I view in flat mode - which I vastly prefer - oh well - at least it is not such a huge thread that it will get lost.

    Thx.

    unkamunka,

I am talking about the Free version of Zone Alarm. I don't believe it allows you to open up ports selectively.

    Joe,

I am running Win2k. How do I access the Windows Messenger Service? I've looked in the Control Panel and Administrative Tools and don't see it but then I might not be looking for the right name.

I am not on a network but plan to network with my wive's PC.

Bob, it sounds like you are using the Pro version. If you are using the free version, how do I turn Stealth on?

    Jim,
I'm only using the freebie version 4.5.594.000.
If you click on the firewall tab, under Internet Security, slide the slider up to "high" or stealth mode.

A good way to check your port security is to use Steve Gibson's security check at:Shields UP
Scroll about half way down the page to "shields Up" and you will see a number of security on line checks you can make.
A lot of other good items there, too.
