    Slow booting process

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Loungers

My friend has asked me to help him after he had dropped his tower PC from a height of about 2 feet, 0.6096 meters.

I opened the case and checked if all the components are still properly seated, and all was OK.

But the machine boots at such a slow pace that it takes 4 minutes to detect the hard drive after it detected the mouse and keyboard. I have seen slow machines, but that was due to software issues, like having a Kazilion startup programs, and TSRs.

But I have not seen or heard of a slow Power On Self Test, beyond having a catastrophic accident, which I am thinking that drop did.

    Any advice?

    Re: Slow booting process

Can one presume that the PC used to run XP (or 2000 or NT)?

It might be worth checking what's in the System Event Log (type EVENTVWR at a Command Prompt), to see if it is riddled with disk errors. However, if it is retrying frequently you ought to be able to hear this. I presume further that if you checked all the components you also checked the seating of the cables.

Did you check the bottom of the case to see if any data had dropped down there?!

    Absolutely hilarious!! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23> Thanks. I needed that after a long, tiring week.
