Moving E-Mail Messages Between Computers (OE 5.50/OE 6.00)

I have an old computer with Windows 95 (OE 5.50.4522.1200) -- no longer connected to the internet. I want to move e-mail messages from that computer to my new one -- Windows XP (OE 6.00.2800.1123), connected to the internet. The only way I have to move these messages is using a floppy. I have figured out how to move one message at a time, but I hope there is a way to do it a bit faster than that! I've checked out other threads that sounded like they had similar problems, but none was quite the same as mine. Can somebody help? Thanks!

Have you checked out MSKB 270670 showing various ways to move email files to another machine.

Yes, I have. I'm no computer expert, but I'm pretty sure I'd never be able to back up all my e-mail messages onto floppy disks that way. I can see how you can copy your mail to a backup file on the desktop, following those instructions, but not how to get all your messages onto (multiple!) floppies for transfer to another computer. If I'm missing something, please tell me!

Well, one way would be to use a file splitter utility.
Back them up to a folder on one machine, then run the file splitter, which will move everything to a set of floppies, then reassemble them in one folder on the other machine. Then import them to your OE.
I use a utility called ( of all things ) File Splitter.

You can google for the term "file splitter" for some of these programs.

Re: Moving E-Mail Messages Between Computers (OE 5.50/OE 6.00)

Thanks for the tip. I'm not unwilling to try it, but it seems to me there ought to be a way to find those messages somewhere on the old computer -- using Explore? -- and then drag them onto the A drive. Then, I'd like to be able to do the reverse on the new computer. I have actually found the messages on the old computer (though as large .dbx files I can't seem to open to retrieve individual messages), but can't figure out where they are on the new one. Am I completely off base, or is this possible?

Tomsterdam's site has everything you need to know about Outlook Express, including transferring messages.

Try the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard".

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Files and Settings Transfre Wizard and follow the prompts. HTH

Thank You! I have just begun exploring the "Tomsterdam" site, but have already found one way of moving groups of files from old to new. As always, I appreciate the help from this list.

I didn't even know this Wizard existed. I haven't had time to follow it all the way through yet, but I will. Thanks to you, too, for your help! And, if anyone has other ideas, I'm always looking for the quickest way -- I still have LOTS of e-mails to transfer.
