Move Outlook.pst to another computer (XP)

I've seen this same problem in many other posts, but maybe my problem is a little different.

I gotta move Outlook to another computer so i can send this one in for repair. It overheats and i'm a little tired of keeping the case open and a big fan running 24/7. But i digress.

    I moved

    Extend.dat and
    Outlook.pst

from Cocuments and SettingsOwnerLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook on the old machine
to Cocuments and SettingsHerbieLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook on the new machine.

    I moved

    Extend.dat
    Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings.FAV
Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings.something ("Office Data File"--I don't know how to get the exact extension to show, which is something else i'd like to be able to do in WIN XP Home. File is 2kb and hasn't changed since I installed Office)
Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings.something ("Office Data File"--ditto. 103 kb, and updated today)
    Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings.srs
    outcmd.dat
OutlPrnt (possible no extension. Windows just says its Type is "FILE")

from Cocuments and SettingsOwnerApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook on the old machine

    to Cocuments and SettingsHerbieApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook

on the new machine (I am owner on my machine, and my son Herbie is the main user of the other one)

So Outlook starts up and runs more or less ok. All my files are there, all my folders too.

    BUT

Only one of my email accounts is active now, and more vexing,

My email rules are all messed up. They are there, but instead of saying "move messages with condition abc to folder xyz," the rule is now "move messages with condition abc to specified folder", where the word specified is in blue and when clicked on leads to a list of folders.

In other words, Outlook has lost track of the destination folders for my 50+ email rules.

I can add my email accounts back in, but i'd rather not redo 50 rules.

Is there something obvious I've overlooked?

Sorry for the long message; i'd appreciate any help!

For the rules... did you export them from the old PC and import them into the new environment?

Re: Move Outlook.pst to another computer (XP)

Thanks for the suggestion. I assumed the rules carried along with the .pst file or some other one.

anyway, i exported from the old and imported into the new (the screens for my Office SP looked different from yours, but i got it done), and the same problem of unidentified folders exists in the importted rules as well. Now i have two identical sets of 50 rules with unspecified destination folders!

could it be that some old original .pst file is considered the container for all destination folders? When i first installed outlook on the new computer, it created an outlook.pst for me. I've closed it and opened the file from the old computer, but maybe outlook is looking for that original outlook.pst file for the destination folders.

    ????

    thanks again.

Re: Move Outlook.pst to another computer (XP)

You stated that you closed the original .pst file and opened the new one that you added. Have you tried renaming the .pst file that was created during the installation to something like outlookold.pst and then copy the .pst file from your old PC to the new environment as outlook.pst? The .pst file is supposed to contain all information without the need of separate files for various parts. If you go back to the original file from the old PC you might even eliminate the extra 50 rules!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Cheers, Bob

P.S. Sorry about the doubling up of the 50 rules!
    Regards,
    Bob
