    Registry disaster (Home Version SR1)

I wonder if anyone can help.

I've been away for a couple of days and, full of excitement with catching-up on emails etc, switch my comptuer on and receive a blue screen with the following message:

    STOP: C0000218{Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
    SystemRootSystem32configSOFTWARE
    or its log or alternative
It is corrupt, absent, or not available.
    Beginning dump for physical memory.
    Physical memory dumo complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for fiurther assistance.

I have tried all the aternative boot up options, safe mode etc and get a similar message.

Am I in really big trouble here? Would welcome some advice. Thanks.

Here is what the Microsoft site has to say about your problem: KB 830084.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks for that Bob. I'm not an adavnced user, which is recommended for Step2: Use recovery system. Will I be asked all sort of techy questions or does the program just run? Thanks.

    Farmer.

The Recovery Console will just run if you tell it to. It's recommended for advanced users because there are no icons, no point and click...just a bare black screen and commands that you type in. If you follow the steps listed in the article you should be fine.

Thanks for tge replies everyone. It tirned out to be a faulty hard disc. Now re-installing everything! Should I start a separate thread asking how I can revover emails for Outlook ? - the old hard disc is not completely trashed. Thanks.

I would suggest posting this as a separate question in the Outlook forum.

You basically need to find the outlook.pst data file on your old hard disk (probably in Documents and SettingsusernameApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook) and copy it to the same location on your new system disk.
