Netscape (Messenger) Mail files (Netscape Communicator 4.7)

I've just ordered a new computer and would like to copy my old (Netscape) E-mail files over to the new computer, even though I'll probably use Internet Explorer on the new computer.

Where are these files located? Is the whole inbox (and each other folder) a single file, or is each message a file? Can these files be read by Word or another program, or only by Netscape?

The Netscape mail files are in the user profile directory and we wouldn't know where that is, in case you chose the location. But you can open Preferences and find the directory name or do a Search in Windows Explorer for something like "inbox" or "mail" that will lead you to the location where the files are stored. The files you want have NO file extension and are called simply Inbox, Sent, Trash and so on. The files that do have a file extension are control files that would be re-created if you used the files in a newer version of Netscape or Mozilla (which I would recommend you do, by the way).

The actual mail files mentioned above are "plain text" files and can be read by any text editor, but not in the mail format that you've become used to. They do contain "coding" and possibly a good bit of HTML formatting, but push come to shove, they are readable. Even if you decide to use a different mail program, I would download and install a version of Mozilla, just so you could continue to refer to your old mail in a format you're used to.

Your Mileage May Vary, but I have never noticed any material difference between the way messages are displayed in Netscape 4.7 and Outlook Express or Outlook. I cannot comment on other e-mail clients. HTH

    Joel,
Migrating Netscape mail files is about as exciting as getting your teeth cleaned. (Not easy to find the files, you don't want to lose anything, etc.) However, it can be done without many complications. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Using the Lounge Search (look up at the line of links on the upper right side of this screen), will get you lots of answers. Here's a few:

    <post#=342853 >post 342853 </post#> discusses finding those files.

    <post#=250033 >post 250033 </post#> covers a similar migration issue.

Regardless, keep us all posted on your progress here. We'll be watching for you!

Many thanks to those who posted. I found the mail folder as NetscapeUsers[username]Mail.
