# Thread: Changing Formats of Time Duration

1. ## Changing Formats of Time Duration

Hello,

As per the attached XL file, I'm trying to get the Custom format right to convert Decimal Time into the Hours:Mins:Secs format.

The format I'm using doesn't seem to work.
It converts 100 Mins (Decimal Time) into 2400 Hours!
It should be 1 Hour 40 Mins 0 Secs.

How can I fix this problem?

Thanks,

BD.

You need to use =A3/1440

Excel stores times as a fraction of 1 day, so you need to divide by the number of minutes in 1 day

3. ## Re: Changing Formats of Time Duration

Excel measures dates and times in days. So you must convert minutes to days in addition to applying custom formatting. There are 24 * 60 = 1440 minutes in a day, so put the following formula in cell B3:

=A3/1440

The custom formatting will take care of the rest.

That's Bril. Thanks,

BD.
