Stop auto indent of replies (Outlook & OE)

In Outlook AND Outlook Express (ALL versions):
Is there any way to stop the system auto indenting all previous parts of a conversation ?
Is there any way to stop the system auto adding > symbols before every line of previous parts of a conversation ?
Is there any way to stop the system auto nudging words from the right hand side onto new lines throughout previous parts of a conversation ?
Is there any way to convince MS that this is the most stupid way to run an e mail system ?
I suspect the answers are NO but, if there is a way, I and many others would be most grateful.
    Thanks, Ray.

For Outlook, you can set the options for the first 2 questions.
    Select Tools>Options...
On the Preferences tab click e-mail options

These settings are not entirely down to decisions by Microsoft but are based upon early standards for e-mail.

    Tony,
    Thanks for your prompt response.
Sorry, I may have got this wrong but, if I do as you suggest, surely I will no longer have any previous conversation attached to my reply.
That completely defeats the object of being able to read a whole conversation (between numerous people, not just two) in sequence, in one message.
    Ray.

I am new to this forum, so please excuse my ignorance.
Can you explain why the reply, as posted here from Tony, misses out some of the (important) detail that was in the email notification I got about his reply ?
    Thanks, Ray.

I don't know about Outlook Express, but in Outlook you can specify how the original message is treated in a reply. I have attached a screenshot of the E-mail options dialog mentioned by Tony55, with the list of options for replies displayed; there is a similar list for forwarded messages. This version is for Outlook 2002 (aka XP).

Re: Stop auto indent of replies (Outlook & OE)

I have already got MY email set up to NOT indent any replies I send.
What I'm trying to do is to stop or get rid of the indents and especially the > symbols that are already in the messages I receive.
    Is this possible please ?
    Ray.

I don't think that is possible - the format of e-mails you receive depend on the settings of the sender, not on your settings. The only thing you could do is create a rule that runs a script for every incoming mail message to reformat it,, but I can't help you with that.

    Thanks Hans,
I suspected that was the case. Nice to have confirmation from a reputable source though.
    Cheers, Ray.

This is really up to <!profile=Tony55>Tony55<!/profile> to answer.

Please be aware, however, that your e-mail notification is the reply to your post as originally posted. Loungers are entitled - for whatever reason (inclusing spelling mistakes) - to go back and edit their own posts. We do encourage people to mark their posts as editted. If they do not, the only way of telling by the time of the post. (This should be in the same order as the numbers of the posts in a thread. If not, it is an almost certain sign the post has been edited.)

Re: Stop auto indent of replies (Outlook & OE)

My original reply also included remarks about Outlook Express which upon checking again I realised did not answer the question so I edited the post to remove that part. As I modified the reply within 1 minute of posting I did not mark it as edited. Sorry for the confusion.

    Thanks Unkamunka & Tony,
It was the speed of the editing that threw me.

Re: Stop auto indent of replies (Outlook & OE)

There are some Outlook add-in tools on Slipstick Message Compose Tools Page that might be of interest to you, such as 'Outlook-Quotefix' and 'eClean' (scroll down to 'Other Tools' for eClean). Slipstick is a handy site which Outlook users should check out.

Personally I have the same objections to malformatted messages as you, but I gave up on reformatting, it's just too time consuming.

I use Email Cleaner - it won't help for your incoming mail, but if you want to clean up an email before forwarding it on, this will do it. Just paste into Email Cleaner, click the clean button, and paste back into your email.

    And it's FREE.
