Stop The Pop-Up Barrage! (IE 6.0.2800)

    Help!

My browser is going berserk. On Saturday, for no explainable reason, my Google page suddenly had an unsolicited Lycos search window in it and I found one on my desktop too. Naturally (for me), I deleted them both.

Ever since then, I've been besieged by pop-up windows. So many that my online speed has been reduced to a crawl. And my computer has been doing odd things offline too.

How can I stop this? Did I somehow change a security setting?

For what it's worth, I have Norton Anti-Virus, Zone Alarm and Popup Manager running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Neal

In addition to all the Wonderful Things suggested in KenK's post, as pointed to by Phil, you might like to work through the tests in Jason Levine's ToolBox, some of which relate to popups.

Also the Google ToolBar does a pretty good job of suppressing popups using (surprise!) its feature "Eliminate pop-up ads"!

    John,

    Those are wonderful things.

I thank you, KenK and Phil (and everyone else) for your help.

I ran the tests in Jayson's Toolbox and I'm trying to sort out the results.

The Google pop-up blocker has been on for months. Which was another reason why the pop-up siege was so surprising.

    Hi Neal

Another solution.........dump Internet Explorer and get either the Mozilla suite or the mozilla Firefox browser (and Thunderbird email client).
Do Not uninstall/delete Internet Explorer. It is required for some system activity and you will still need it for some (very few) websites.

Search in the "Other Browsers and Email Clients" forum for info and download links.

    Have a Great day!!!

Re: Stop The Pop-Up Barrage! (IE 6.0.2800)

Thank you all for your invaluable suggestions.

It took some doing (and downloading), but I've finally gotten the pop-ups under control. (In addition to everything else, I added a router, and that seemed to help too).

However, the last remaining vexation is the way Google's been working. Instead of cutting right to the answer(s) I'm looking for, I get a page of blatant advertising garbage with my search terms in them that I have to wade through to get to the real information.

How do I turn this stuff off and return Google to the useful, efficient tool it used to be?

    Thanks again.

    Neal
