    Increasing row numbering (2000 SR1)

I have a worksheet that presently has 120 rows that I have numbered by dragging the first few numbers down the column - (filldown?).

From time to time I have to insert rows & I drag the numbering down each time. Is there a way to tell Excel to do this automatically each time a row is inserted or is a macro needed? If the latter I assume I could record a macro to do this.

You can enter the formula =Row() in the cells. If you want to start numbering in row 5, for example, use =Row()-4. You only have to copy down the formula to the inserted cells, not the entire range. If you want this to be done automatically, you'd need a macro.

I'll try that later. But in the meantime thank you Hans for your rapid response.
