Explanatory Note on Line Chart (2003)

I have a line chart with lots of data. Occasionally I want to enter a simple explanation at one data point, say on October 1. I know I can select that data point, and then begin keyboarding. When I press the Enter key, Excel places the explanatory entry on the chart. I have to move the entry to the location of the data point. When I enter more data, the data point for October 1 moves to the left, but the explanatory entry stays where I placed it; it didn

Check out Rob Bovey's free XY Chart Labeler. Despite the name, it can be used for line charts too.

This add-in lets you specify a range to use as source for data point labels. The labels will move with the data points automatically. In your case, you'd create a range in which only one or two cells are filled.

Never mind. I found an answer. I can select the data point, right click, and click on Format Data Point. Then I select Data Labels, and then I select Value. Actually any of them work. Then I select Okay. The value appears next to the data point. The next part is tricky. You have to go into the box where Excel shows the value. Select the value itself and then write your explanatory note. Click outside the chart, and the explanatory note is left behind, attached to the data point. When you add more data, the value cum explanatory note, moves with the data point.

It is adding the labels to all the points. Put the label next to the point and when you choose the range choose the entire range of cells next to the points.

Re: Explanatory Note on Line Chart (2003)

The range you use for "Select a Label Range" should have the same shape and size as the data series it is for (in "Select a Data Series to Label"). The easiest way is to use a column to the right of, or row below the data range for the chart, depending on whether the chart displays the data by columns or by rows. So if you want to attach a comment to the fourth data point, the comment should be in the fourth cell of the range for "Select a Label Range".

That makes sense and it explains a lot about the add-in. For now I think I'll do it the way I found in Excel. It's simpler and doesn't involve an add-in.

The big advantage of the addin is when you have a lot of datalabels to add instead of just 1.

FYI,
The manual way can also be used to enter a cell reference or named range (instead of just text) if you go into the formula bar and enter an equal (=) followed by the name (after you enter the equal you can actually change sheets if desired and select the cell.)

The advantage of this is that the reference can change if you have a dynamic reference (eg an IF statement) in the cell, making it live.
