Outlook Contacts Alpha Tabs (XP)

Is there a way to change the way the letters are grouped on the Contacts alphabetical tabs? We have lots of A's and B's and not many W's, X'.s, Y's and Z's. I'd like to separate the AB and combine the others. Can this be done? If so, how?

Thanks!

I was about to say 'I don't think so' but I noticed in Outlook 2003 when I right-click on the Alpha Buttons there is a 'Best Fit' option. If that is in XP, see if it helps. It didn't seem to do anything for me, I suspect it autosenses the data in the current View and accordingly adjusts the column widths, not the Button Grouping.

Well, John I tried that and now I have even fewer columns being displayed. I finally figured out how to get back to more columns (I am feeling really dumb today so it was a challenge ). It did not help the tab situation as you rightly guessed. Looks I'm stuck with MicroSoft's idea of filing rather than mine.

I think I just played the same column width game as you. Perhaps someone else knows. Meanwhile, I hope your relatives aren't all surnamed "Van-something", which I ran into once auditing a small town bank in Iowa.

John, my parents grew up in a small Iowa town and the whole area was heavily Dutch so lots of "vans". And I live in Michigan and the Grand Rapids area is also very Dutch (and they have....ta DA...a Tulip Festival in nearby Holland, Michigan).

No this Outlook list is all business contacts and I file them by company and we seem to have tons of companies and contacts beginning with A and B.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Outlook Contacts Alpha Tabs (XP)

I'm using XP, and I have a separate line for each letter. I just expanded Outlook so it filled up more of my screen vertically, and I got separate lines. If I use 800x600 screen resolution and maximize Outlook, my letters still share a row. If I use 1024x768 (or smaller), I can have each letter on its own line.

I hope this makes sense.

Becky, the letter tabs I'm talking about run vertically on my screen - down the right side. Thus they are not in rows. I like the layout I have for my Contacts. I just want the tabs done to my specifications, not Microsoft's. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think we're talking about the same thing, but I must not be explaining myself very well. If I expand my Outlook window to be taller, I get each letter by itself (see the attached picture, second item). If my Outlook screen is not expanded, those letters get to share a row (the first item). You want it to look like the second picture, right? That's what I thought you were saying.

I hope this helps,
Becky

You're absolutely right. However, it makes it hard to read for these old eyes so have to go back to 800 x 600. THANK YOU!

I think that's business justification for a 21" flat screen monitor. (It'd never fly in my company.)

John...you are right on top of things today! I'll have to remember that. However, it won't be this week - my raise comes first
