    Search and replace text

I'd like to find a low cost program to search a directory of text files. This program will need to look in each text file for a string of characters, and then replace them with another.

A nice to have feature would be the ability to search within the directory's sub-directories, but it is not a deal breaker.

Does anyone know of a suitable program? I've done a search here in the lounge, but either we don't have something already, or I'm using the wrong terms.

    Thanks for listening <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>.

    Chris,
Take a look at the programs here: File Management & Tools - Freeware. A couple look promising from the brief descriptions.

I haven't used this, Chris, but it may be worth a look: http://silveragesoftware.com/hffr.html

    Hi Chris:
    I downloaded Advanced Find & Replace in early 2003, but never used it. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> It's $30 bucks after a 21 day eval. I'm sure I read a good write-up on it at the time. That's why I download so many d--- things. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>
    Hope this helps,

    Re: Search and replace text

There's a free program called GSAR - General Search And Replace program (not the Girl Scouts of Appleseed Ridge!) - but that will operate only on a single file. It would be quite straightforward to write a BATch file to invoke it against each file in a directory, or range of directories, provided one knew the structure...

    Try here for a couple of popular <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>bies.

Thanks everyone - I've looked at most of your suggestions.

I also searched via google after I posted, and found this one, Actual Search & Replace. It does what I want, plus a bit more.

BigAl, your suggestion in particular, provided a demo version that wouldn't replace, only search. But other than that, it did look like it would work.

    <hr>...a demo version that wouldn't replace... <hr>
Huh, that's strange Chris. I thought it was freeware but had never downloaded it. It's a moot point if you've found something that'll do the job, but maybe you clicked the download button on one of his shareware HTML tools. You've got other work to do, so I'm gonna give this a look, for the (possible) benefit of someone searching the Lounge in the future. I'll post whatever I learn.

I'm a little late to the game, but I have always liked UltraEdit for its versatility. It does what you're asking and a whole lot more. I would probably be overkill for a simple search and replace app but I use it as my editor for so many different things, I consider this a nice bonus.

    Re: Search and replace text

I downloaded and tried the software, Chris and it works pretty slick. You must've clicked on his download link on the left side nav bar and downloaded some other utility. In the link I posted, the download is in the body of the writeup and is free. But, as I said, it's a moot point if you found something that works for you! I pointed it to a directory of HTML files and had it make a change in my name and it worked in a second or two.

    Re: Search and replace text

Sorry Al, my mistake. I saw the same file listed on a website where I found the one I was using. I did try "the other version", and that's where the demo happened.
