If your friend is prepared to spend $150 then they can use ERD Commander from http://www.winternals.com.

Alternatively there are a number of "hackers" tools that can be used, at your own risk. A google search for linux bootable password recovery windows turned up a good selection.

Finally you could move the disk to another PC, backup all the data files that you need, and then move the disk back and carry out a complete new installation of Windows and your applications.

I know, I know, this is the silliest question of the year: has he tried contacting the seller (OEM) of the computer to see if they WILL help him? Seems to me this surely can't be the first time an innocent soul has done something like this. You would think that, if they have a record of the sale, the least they could do is help him do an emergency restore. And if that works, I'd bet he'll let you guide him in how to prevent this in the future, huh?

This is supposed to be one of the best,,and it's free. Go here> Forgot your NT admin password Read what ya want and then scroll down to the bottom where it says" How To Get It" and follow the directions.
Other wise here is one that is very easy to use but it cost $70,00 NTAccess can replace the Admin password of your Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows 2003 system by rebooting your computer with a special set of boot disks.

One more solution: install Windows once again "on top" of existing installation (if she has Installation CD, of course - Restore CD will erase everything). All settings will be lost and all programs must be re-installed, but all files will remain intact...

I'd certainly be interested to know if you give Cowboy's first link a try, how it turns out.

    Re: Lost password (XP Home)

Well, I've struggled through the instructions on that site. I don't feel confident enough to try it on my own computer without studying it more, and I'm absolutely sure my neighbor won't have a clue what to do with this utility. But thanks for the tip!

I think I'ma gonna suggest my neighbor get on the phone to the OEM and pray he gets a support rep who can patiently walk him through a fix. I'll bet there's some secret-squirrel set of instructions that can get him running again. Thanks everybody for your suggestions! I'll let you know how it all turns out.

If you/he can login as the administrator in safe mode you may be able to reset the password on the everyday account. Most users don't ever set a password on the built-in admin account.

That's the trouble, Joe. He indicated in the first post that he's already logged in as Administrator (assumed to be the built-in).

    Re: Lost password (XP Home)

"and he is the administrator. There's no other login to use"

If this machine is running "Home" the ONLY way to get to the Administrator account is by being in the safe mode. Then what account is he trying to use to get into the machine and how?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Ya got me, Dave. I have no experience with XP Home and didn't know that.

    Re: Lost password (XP Home)

Well, I'll be sheep-dipped! I didn't know about the "hidden administrator" thing either. I haven't even looked at my neighbor's computer yet, though I'm sure it's XP Home. I run the same thing (Home), and on this machine I have three user accounts, two of which have administrator rights. If I understand what you folks are saying, there's yet another "real" administrator account that I can get to only via Safe Mode.

My next question: Does this phantom administrator have some secret password? (Seems I ran into a reference to such a thing somewhere.)
