IE reinstall problem; how to remove patch? (XP/SP2)

I'm trying to reinstall Outlook Express & IE 6 and am getting an error message about the software "not passed windows logo testing" and the install fails. According to http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN=US;828031 it is due to patch KB823559 and the solution is to uninstall the patch, reinstall IE and then reinstall the patch. However the patch doesn't appear in Add/Remove programs. It is listed in the registry under SP2 (with no values, just the kb-number), however. What can I do?

Thanks

Are you really running SP-2? It is currently beta software. I'd be very leery about making individual changes to beta software.

Did you check for a folder name like $NTUninstallQxxxxxx$ ( where the patch number is x ) located in C:Windows?

There should be line for each hotfix installed, with the exe file to remove and revert to the state before the patch.

Patch KB823559 replaces two files in your C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedTextConv folder: HTML32.CNV and MSCONV97.DLL . This patch contains vesion 2003.1100.5426 of these files. If you have this version installed and uninstall information lost, you can manually rename this files and extract previous version from your Installation CD using command:

expand d:i386HTML32.CN_ "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedTextConvHTML32.CNV"

expand d:i386MSCONV97.DL_ "C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedTextConvMSCONV97.DLL"

assuming that d: is your CD drive.

Re: IE reinstall problem; how to remove patch? (XP/SP2)

Thanks for your help. I don't know if I'm running SP2, I just noticed "SP2" in the registry and jumped to conclusions. How can I tell definitively? It's a brand new Sony VAIO.

They didn't give me any CD's. Just a pre-installed machine and some supposed way to restore the machine when/if necessary. I'm not really comfortable with this method of software management. :-(
I'll search for the CN_ file and see if it's on the hard drive somewhere.

I saw the reference to $NTUninstallQxxxxxx$ in the KB document but I didn't understand how to interpret it (the $---$ refers to a user-supplied value then?). I'll do a search for NTUninstall and see what I come up with.

I'll let you know what I find out. Thanks again.

If it is a new machine, what happened that you need to reinstall IE and OE?
Have you tried using the VAIO Recovery Wizard to recover the need of reinstalling these programs?

As for the OS CD, you should be able to burn a set of CDs and/or CD and DVDs to use if your system fails, the following is from the VAIO Recovery Wizard..

About the VAIO Recovery Media Kit
The VAIO Recovery Media Kit can be used to start the VAIO Recovery Wizard, if your system is unable to start normally. You can also reclaim the portion of your hard drive that is reserved for system recovery. You can create your own VAIO Recovery Media Kit, or purchase a kit from Sony.

You can create your kit using a single type of media or by combining media types, as follows:

One CD-R media and one or two DVD-R or DVD+R media
(Your VAIO

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Open Windows explorer. open the $ntuninstallQxxxxx$ file in question, in sub folder spuninst is a spuninstall.exe file.
Run it.

You can tell the service pack by right clicking My Computer then selecting Properties. The service pack should be in the System section of the General tab. See <post#=370498>post 370498</post#> for instructions on uninstall of hotfix.

Is it possible to "roll back" to a date before a patch was installed by using the System Restore feature? I've not had this problem, but I am curious if this would work with service patches from MS?

Skitterbug,

Sure, it should work OK.
As long as you have a recent restore point. It's probably good practice to set a new restore point before installing the patch. ( or any other major change, for that matter )

for your reply Bob!

I guess it puzzles me then why "mdchachi" didn't just do a roll back to a prior date before all of his troubles started. He had stated that it was a brand new Sony VAIO. Wouldn't that have taken care of his problems with IE6 and the like? Or did I miss something completely when reading through the posts? I am and curious?

It also depends on if System Restore was enabled to begin with and if the restore point went back far enough.
A lot of second guessing going on without some input from him.

I haven't had time to try your various suggestions yet but to answer your questions.

I was trying to replace IE / OE with Japanese versions of the same. When I failed I thought well the Japanese version doesn't work so I'll just try to reinstall English version and ended up with the same issue.

As for going back to a restore point part of the problem is ignorance with how the process works and also because, at first, I wasn't trying to get back to the initial state. Also if I did restore back, wouldn't that wipe out all programs we've installed since we got the machine?

Lightning storm... gotta go. Thanks.

Re: IE reinstall problem; how to remove patch? (XP

Hi there, I am absolutely no expert on this, but recently I had cause to use System Restore for the first time on this machine, (the latest batch of Updates caused hanging and slowness), the default restore points only appear to go back 3 months, and each point lists what has been loaded and when. I selected the latest restore point, which was only a few days before I had trouble, and everything came back up perfectly. HTH, good luck.

It will only wipe out anything that was installed since the date of the SR. So, if you restore a point set 3 days ago, it will only be missing the last 3 days of NEW changes. Anything from before that point will remain the same. Also, if you don't resolve your problem with THAT restore, you can revert back to before you tried the SR point.
