Desktop Icons (Win XP)

How can I get my desktop icons to stay put, exactly to the location that I drag them to? The program seems to snap them into position, always a few pixels one way or the other. If it's relevent, I'm using 32 bit color on a 1024 X 768 screen res.

You can play happily with the "Arrange Icons By" submenu, obtaining it by right-clicking somewhere empty on the desktop.

The specific setting that you are looking for is in the menu John noted, as show in the attached screen shot.

    Cute cursor Mark !!

Is it part of a theme or part of a set of cursors or a seperate cursor ??

It's actually a theme that I have for CursorXP, a neat little add-on that I've been using for a few years now. I've gotten to the point where I just can't stand plain old pointers. What you can't see in the screen shot are the slick animations that go along with the cursors!

    Hey Doc,

Like Mark, I have been using Cursor XP ( along with Style XP ) for a long time and it has a huge number of variations not only in cursors but complete desktop themes. I recommend it. I have mine set to cycle through a chosen set of themes every few days. Better than the boring default stuff.

Thanks Mark and John. Snap to Grid There was a time when I knew this. That knowledge must've slipped into the "Why do I have to assume everything is complicated" section of my brain.

Speaking of themes, has anyone any experience with the alternate shell program: Aston ? I remember trying WindowBlinds several years back and found it to be very bug-gy. Maybe this shell replacement is better stuff. Lots of neat skins, etc.

If it's any consolation I had to poke around for a bit before I remembered where it was myself.

I've not tried Aston, but you might want to give Windowblinds another go. It's much improved these days, I recall a time where I thought it was more trouble than it was worth also.

    Howdy Bob !!

I'm gonna check out CursorXP right after I finish the yardwork today (the one major bummer about spring). Appreciate your input. I tried Style XP when I first started with XP and had some trouble with the program installing or loading, and dumped it right away. I've heard so many good things from so many people who, like yourself, know from first-hand expierence how well the program performs, that I may have to give it another try.

I've always kinda felt that if you use the default stuff, it's YOUR fault !!!

    Hi Mark,

Thanks for that link. I've been using Pankaj Arora Software's Tumi Cursor PowerPack since I started using XP and have been quite pleased with that. Simple and not too intrusive. But I'm always looking for new toys to keep my idle mind out of trouble. The animation and customization features in CursorXP look like they might be fun to play with. And some of the links on the site have lead me to some other "fun" cursors (a new avenue of the computer to explore). There just aren't enough hours in the day !!!

    Bob,

Love the cursors, (Thanks to Mark for the link ) but can you tell me more about the themes and rotating through them every couple days ??? I grabbed the free version today and a couple of the extra cursor sets that are linked from the CursorXP site (Blue Lock & Blue Key are pretty sharp), but am unable to Configure or Compose anything. Are those options strictly in the pay for play version ???

    Hi Doc,

Glad you are enjoying the change.

Style XP has a tab named "rotate" which when opened gives you the options of which styles are in the loop and how often they will change, never, at bootup, daily , weekly, etc. I'm not sure if this is just in the paid version or not but it seems to me it was also in the free version.
