    MailMerge Field Descriptions (2000/XP/2003)

Does anyone know how to display descriptions of mail merge items which are different than the field name which is inserted into the document? In other words, you've got a field named "Address" in the mail merge source, but you want the user to see "This is a description of address" when they click the "Insert Merge Fields" button. If they then select "This is a description of address", it is inserted into the document as a mergefield with the name "Address".

As far as I know this is not possible in Word 2002 (XP) and earlier, and frankly, I would be surprised if it was possible in Word 2003, but I don't have that.

This depends on the data source for mail merge - in general Word uses whatever the column name is from Word tables, delimited text files and Excel worksheets, and field names in Access. One solution is to change the column heading or field name to something that approximates the description you want. As I recall however, there are some issues with field names that contain spaces and very long field names in Word.
