MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

Meantime, my own home page has just been taken over by msn.com - doubly irritating because it is the USA stuff not the UK!

Adaware, Spybot S&D, hijackthis, Spywareblaster all installed and used at an amateur level, none show any current problems. CSWShredder runs, and finds two registry entries it doesnt like, says it fixes them and closes saying 2 entries restored. On restart the problem is still there.

Any ideas on this one?

Hijacking seems almost worth a forum of its own at the moment!

Thanks in anticipation,

Mike C

Hi Mike

msn.com....as in Microsoft????
If so, you should be able to change your home page in your IE preferences.
Otherwise, check out the hijacking forums at http://www.net-integration.net/ and http://www.wilderssecurity.com/.

Have a Great day!!!

Cant help I'm afraid but same thing happend here 2 days ago - for no apparent reason - though I had been using windows messenger and assumed I agreed to changing some preference without realising. Changed mine back through IE preferences and it stuck ok so far.

One thing you can check is in Spybot S&D. There is a setting that prevents you from changing your home page. You might check the registry at:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftInternet ExplorerControl Panel

Check if there is a REG_DWORD named HomePage and its value is set to 1. This change disables the home page controls. You will need to set it back to 0 to change the home page.
Hope this helps,

Re: MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

Thanks everyone. I seem to have fixed it, though sledgehammers and nuts come to mind.....
It looked to me as if something was managing to reset the home page despite my protection, and then something else was trying to stop it changing back - and failing.

I added spyguard to my lengthening list of defences, updated all the definition files, went off-line and took all the protection off in Ad-aware and ad-watch, Spywareguard, SpywareBlaster etc. ran them all. then changed the home page back to my usual "about", then re-set the protection. So far it has stick.

I suspect that though not incompatible you need to put a mot more thought into the settings of these defensive applications than I had initially.

Be nice if someone steeped in this were to recommend the current best set of tools AND their settings, but I gues it would be out of date virtually as soon as written...

Thanks again to all

Re: MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

Now I am having this same problem. MSN will hijack my homepage intermittently. Not every time, but often enough. I read this entire thread and tried everything suggested. My adaware 6 finds an entry it calls a data minor and says possible home page hijack attempt. I let adaware delete the registry entry but a day or so later it is back again and my home page has been reset to MSN. This is happening to all 4 computers on my network. 1 with xp home and 3 with 98. All up to date with updater. I emailed MSN support but haven't heard anything. My spybot is not set to stop the homepage from changing. Maybe it should be?

Re: MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

John,
I have had a couple of minor excursions since my first messages. I now use adaware, spybot, highjack this, pest patrol, spyware blaster in various ways to try to cope. One can get quite paranoid. I think that it was the freezing of the home page settings in spybot that sorted the home page redirection . Though I have seen something since that says it i better ?homepageguard or something like that - a specific remedy.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply. I have been using Ad-Aware and Spybot but I quess I better try the others as well. I heard back from MSN support and they directed me to a Microsoft page about spyware. Little good did that do. I will keep trying. The funny thing is, it doesn't do it all the time. It can be days of seening my normal blank page and then all of a sudden MSN will be my home page. And I don't use MSN.

Re: MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

I have to chime in here also since I get the MSN.COM hijack occasionally. I AM able to change it back in IE Options but then again it pops up sometime later.
I also have run the usual Adaware, Spybot progs without picking up anything.

The only thing that I have found, is that it seems to come out only after my wife visits her favorite sites, not when I go to any of mine. So one of those sites must be the culprit.
She does go to msn.com itself and it's opinion page "slate". She also goes to some genealogy sites and northjersey.com. None of these are on my list of visited sites. I will have to go into each of them myself to see if I can determine one or the other. The real problem seems to be the fact that it doesn't happen that often.

I have just tried the reg change suggested above and have checked Spybot where the protect home page was enabled. ( but didn't work )
This is NOT new to me anyway, but I have just been changing the d**m thing back whenever it happened. Now that I see it mentioned here in the Lounge, we will have to be more vigilant and see if we can up with a solution.

I do not think that it is MSN that is doing this. Some site that you are visiting is most likely doing this. I have seen some sites that will send one to Disneyland.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Dave,
Probably not MSN, it would be too obvious or so it would seem.
Just pointed that site out as one my wife visits and I don't.

Although MSN (and many others) have a 'Make this your homepage' button/box/section/... If someone gets click happy that could be selected accidentally.

Joe,
I can just see the scenario developing...........

Wife: Did you find out anything in the Lounge about us being hijacked to MSN?

Bob: Yes, Joe said you were click happy, That's why !!

Loud explosion in background, numerous things flying about. Local paper reports, power outage in town.

Just kidding, Joe. I know what you mean .

Re: MSN Hijacked my Home Page (XPHome+IE6SP2)

Had this for some time just an inconvenience as I use "blank" IE to start anyway and just change back through tools>options>use blank. What I have discovered in my case is: although cant find which visited site causes it to happen - when I run Ad Aware it picks it up (see attachment). If I let Ad Aware remove it, the next time I boot up and open IE - its been hijacked. but if I ignore the Ad Aware and just leave it there my blank page loads as normal. I cant figure it but annoying as it is I live with it.
