Double-click template, opens template, not doc (Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR1))

    Hello,

I tried searching the MS knowledgebase and the forum, but I haven't seen anything like this. My hard drive recently died, and I was given a new one, with a new installation of Office. I have re-set all my settings/options, etc., but I've just noticed that when I double-click a template (.dot) file, which used to start a new document based on the template, the template itself opens. I don't know why this is happening, and can't seem to figure out how to stop it. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    Open Windows Explorer.
    Select Tools | Folder Options...
    Activate the File Types tab.
Locate and select DOT / Microsoft Word Template.
If you use Windows XP, click Advanced, otherwise click Edit.
You'll see a list of available actions, among which Open and New.
Open is probably bold, indicating that it is the default action.
Select New and click the Default button. New should become bold.
    Click OK, then Close.

I had never heard of this happening until a few weeks ago, but there have been a couple of similar reports in the lounge recently. I wonder if there is some common cause that we have yet to identify?
